What books do your children aged 3-6 like?

I have DD5 and DD3 and I'm trying to clear out and update their bookshelf. Older daughter loves Supertato and the younger one likes Julia Donaldson. There are millions of childrens books out there and without being able to take them to the library to look, I don't have a clue what to get! Also any recommendations on where to buy cheaply would be appreciated, now that the Book People have gone under.

The Works are great for cheap children's books. The do lots of bundles as well. 10 for £10, that kinda thing.

Mine have both loved the ‘Oi Frog/dog’ series. Also, ‘The day the crayons quit’ and other books by the same author. Can’t remember their name sorry!

But they’re more for 3 or 4 year olds. Getting to 5 or 6, I would say more Enid Blyton enchanted wood, the treehouse books

My son is 3 and he loves his new Dr Seuss books, I expect he will enjoy them for a good few years yet. Also Hairy McLairy.

DD2 is 5 and has mostly the same favourite books as when she was 3. She likes Winnie the Witch, Mog the cat, Zog and some terribly badly written versions of fairy tales that we bought a huge set of when DD1 was little. She used to prefer Peppa Pig books, The Tiger Who Came to Tea. I have tried to move on to short chapter books, but she still prefers picture books.

Shirley Hughes, especially to begin to stretch your 5 year old. Non fiction, Usbourne are good.

Enid Blyton enchanted wood, the treehouse books yes my nearly 4 year old is loving the Enchanted Wood and we’ll move on to the Farraway Tree next.
We did a Roald Dahl a while a go, some of them are very short and can be read over a sitting or two.

Claude books by Alex T Smith- they are a halfway house between picture books and chapter books.

There are loads of short chapter books, with some pictures, now. Some might be a bit complex for your younger child, as they are aimed at 5-8 year olds. My DDs other favourites include the Hotel Flamingo series, the Jolly Rodgers series, Shifty McGrifty and Slippery Sam, Hubble Bubble, Adventures of Mr Penguin, Fabio the Great Flamingo Detective... And a lot more I can't remember.

My DD is 4.5 and still enjoys Julia Donaldson, Supertato etc. However I’ve also been reading some simple chapter books including the Worst Witch series, the Naughtiest Unicorn series (Pip Bird) The Cat and the King (Nick Sharratt) and the Lolo books (Niki Daly).

You Choose was a firm favourite for many years.

DogMan (comic strip so feels like a proper book but word-minimal), easier Roald Dahls, some of the early readers - there's a series of Three Little Princesses/Astronauts/Magicians/Vampires/Pirates that both of my kids liked around the age 6 mark. Plus things like Where's Wally.

I encourged my dd to read by getting some personalised books,She loved seeing her name in print. Wordably is a fabulous website to have a browse on and its lovely that you can preview any books you create.just an idea.
