Illegal Baby Names!

Saw this article on 'illegal' baby names. My name is apparently banned in Saudi Arabia.

planetradio.co.uk/northsound/world/trending-news/baby-names-rules-illegal-confirmed-2/

Anyone know what would happen if I tried to move there?

Mine & DH's names would be banned in Iceland as they contain letters not in their alphabet.

fourpeasinapod · 17/04/2020 10:19

So what happens if you go on holiday to that country with a banned name? Surely you’re not affected?

fuckinghellthisshit · 17/04/2020 10:28

They aren't 'banned names' thou are they, they are names that have been changed or disallowed due to belief it will harm the child - sometimes because the name is being used to spite the other parent. In 2013 a Kentucky judge ruled it was illegal to name a child Messiah but he was overturned.

Of course not! Jenny and Theo can go to Israel, even emigrate and become citizens there, even though Hebrew doesn't have the J or TH sounds. They'll just have to accept that the spelling of their names in their new passports will be approximate, and that people will maul their names. Just as English people often maul struggle to pronounce Welsh and Japanese names accurately.

Does remind us we live in a relatively liberal democracy ...

Doesn't it just prove how thick some people are? I mean, what Australian sits down and decides that Spinach or Batman is just the name for their new baby.

But all names have to come from somewhere surely ? It's not like we have somehow finished history and can't come up with new names ?

AdobeWanKenobi · 17/04/2020 12:22

Fairly sure the name 'Judge' is an old one in the USA so can't see it being banned.
Suspect the article linked is click bait with a tiny bit of truth mixed with mostly bullshit.

I'm wondering about why Harriet isn't approved in Iceland. Seems a normal name to me.

Dowser · 17/04/2020 13:46

Harriet in Iceland because they don’t have c, w, q and y
I’ve got a banging headache..but I see none of those letters there

Dowser · 17/04/2020 13:48

Z not Y

drunkyhumptydumpty · 17/04/2020 13:55

My daughters middle name is in the band UK names. We live in the UK.

The OPs cite appears to be a puffpiece for "MomJunction.com" ... which in turn leads to a HuffPost article which immediately refutes the opening claim:

The General Register Office says there are no restrictions on parents - except for exceptional cases, such as a name which could be deemed offensive, when an official could refuse to register it.

drunkyhumptydumpty · 17/04/2020 14:04

Ahh that's boring. I was hoping to tell her she was breaking the law in a few years.

Hippofrog · 17/04/2020 14:08

Why is Linda banned in Saudi??
