Tell me about your dog

DH is likely to work from home for good after this so we could finally get a dog.

We're after something that's not too big - we have a medium sized garden and an 8 year old DD so will need to be ok with those. We live semi rural so lots of open space around.

We looked at a beagle but thought its tendency to run off might be too strong so currently thinking of a cross breed, maybe a beaglier.

DH isn't keen on cavapoos or cockapoos which I quite liked.

Ideally it won't shed too much either.

If you have a dog that might suit our lifestyle please tell me about him/her.

What about a rescue dog?

I can put you in touch with a very reputable Romanian rescue. They are very thorough in their checks and many dogs are fostered in the uk already.

I have a collie cross and preferred getting an older dog rather than a puppy as she’s very calm and relaxed with my kids.

I personally can’t be doing with all these doodlenoodle breeds. The ones I know are all a bit loopy.

Lagotto Romagnolo, tibetan terrier, soft coated wheaten or Schnauzer would all be worth a look I think.

We have a beagle crossed with a poodle. She is scruffy, affectionate, has zero recall, lots of fun, never sheds and doesn't smell. She's full of energy and needs stimulation, but she is our perfect dog. She's hardy, small ish and always up for adventure, but also likes to cuddle up in the evening.

Scottish Terrier. Loves a walk, doesn't moult but does require regular grooming. I taught myself how to groom him so that saves us a few quid.
Hardy little dogs, incredibly loyal and reasonably clever.

Ylvamoon · 16/04/2020 17:19

Tibetan Terrier, lovely fun dogs. Not a Terrier or hunting breed. So no tendency to run off. But they are cheeky, full of fun and need to be with their people. But I am biased, I have currently 4!

OnlyToWin · 16/04/2020 17:21

Have known a few beagles - they are very much a hound - very scent driven so think you’ve made the right decision there. Am sure people have lovely, well-behaved beagles, but all the ones I have known have been challenging!!

I would recommend a miniature schnauzer or a border terrier.

WindowGazer2 · 16/04/2020 17:23

Border terrier fits your brief. Fantastic with children.

Zaphodsotherhead · 16/04/2020 17:24

I've got a Patterdale.

Do not get a Patterdale.

That is all.

Dinnertime22 · 16/04/2020 17:27

A Sharpei. Lovely dogs and excellent with children. Never sheds and are generally very calm.

Carlton08 · 16/04/2020 17:30

Whippets are amazing. Extremely affectionate, loyal, lots of funny little habits. Really low maintenance - will run around like mad for a short time but then happy to chill. Not much hair so don't make too much mess. Mine is the perfect companion.

midnightstar66 · 16/04/2020 17:30

My ds has a beagle. He's 13 now and we all adore him but my goodness he's the smelliest dog and my sister says she'd never ever have got a beagle if she'd realised how much they shed hair. Everything is always covered in a carpet of fur and she's the tidiest person I know (they are also bad chewers as puppies)

KerryMucklowe · 16/04/2020 17:31

We have a beagle mixed with a springer. She's crackers but is so clever, has never run off and is the most affectionate dog I've ever known.
She is almost a year old and I would say the first five months were hard but that was just normal puppy stuff.
Good luck with whatever puppy you chose.

Kitsmummy · 16/04/2020 17:33

Pug. He's a wanker.

twinnywinny14 · 16/04/2020 17:33

We have a cocker spaniel and she is a great family dog. Needed lots of exercise until she was about 2, but she’s never had masses of it. She was also so easy to train (neither moe nor DH had had a dog before). She is a really great dog and we’ve never had any issues with her.

Windyatthebeach · 16/04/2020 17:34

Please don't rescue from abroad..
There are enough in UK shelters..
We have 2 Lurchers. Very underestimated as a fab family pet.
Ds has a really close relationship with them both. He is 5, they are 6 +9..
Great off lead and with our dcats. Shed little, eat little, fold up small too!

Please, please, please get a rescue dog. There are so many who need a good home but have been abandoned through no fault of their own Sad

Fedupandpoor · 16/04/2020 17:36

*I've got a Patterdale.

I'll add a Labrador to that. Hairy food whores.

Pieceofpurplesky · 16/04/2020 17:36

Please rescue a dog. There are so many that need homes. I rescued a stinky, daft, adorable pug

Easilyanxious · 16/04/2020 17:37

We have a border collie but wouldn't recommend with young kids as some can be not great all though ours is fine and so were our previous 2 but think they are dogs for more experienced owners in my opinion .
Def look at rescue of you can as dog personality often already showing etc and any breed can have a challenging dogs but I think a lot is about what time you put in , training , walking etc . Less shedding tends to be more poodle or Poodle mixes

CakeHoleinRoof · 16/04/2020 17:38

Please please rescue.

KateF · 16/04/2020 17:41

I have a bichon frise. Have had him from a puppy and he's five now. Very affectionate, likes a walk but doesn't need masses of exercise, very good with children, doesn't shed but does need grooming every 6-8 weeks so need to factor that into expenses. His only fault is he's barky in the garden if I'm not out there with him but never barks when we're out.

fairplay · 16/04/2020 17:42

I came on for the photos Grin we were due to home a rescue collie x lurcher just as lock down came into force. Perfect mix of calm, playful and intelligent.

Our ddog who we sadly had pts in November was a collie x Jack russel.she was crazy, even at 13 years of age. She was a grumpy old woman at the end and I miss her terribly.

TheTempest · 16/04/2020 17:42

I currently have 4.

Patterdale- batshit crazy, she’s 15 blind deaf dementia and arthritis. Still probe to biting/fighting/running away and endless barking. Don’t do it! I’ve had her since she was 6 and has never got any easier but full of fun.

Small rescue terrier cross breed. Very cute, amazingly well behaved, great to train. Hates small children but tbf we knew that when we got him and it’s easy to stop him approaching them

Rescue spaniel puppy from a Spanish rescue. Bonkers and great fun, really soppy and easy to train. Recall is iffy. Could run for 22 hours a day and still have enough energy to dig/chew/ pounce on puppy 2.

Spanish Rescue puppy two. Some sort of pondenco/terrier thing, thinks he’s a teeny tiny lap dog but is actually 20kg! Pretty much perfect dog.

I’d get a rescue, an older dog preferably. I’ve also had a rescue chiahua cross, he died last year aged 9 and he was my baby. I also had an American bulldog who was an angel boy and we lost him 3 weeks ago aged 10.

We’re going rescue staff next!
