Help! Poor bird stuck in the chimney

We have either a pigeon or a magpie stuck in the chimney. It is (we think) sitting on a ledge, too high up to reach.

Both types of bird like sitting on our roof and this one probably overbalanced and fell in!

It has made a few attempts to fly up and out but that ain’t happening. We have left the room and left all the windows open but the poor little sod hasn’t come down yet, after 4 hours.

Any suggestions to help free it?

Good luck! We've had several over the years and are soooo happy now we have cowls fitted!

It must have fallen asleep last night when we were shining the torch up the chimney but it is awake again this morning and flapping. Picture (which I hope has attached) shows hot cross bun bits on magnifying mirror pointed up chimney. I heard a ‘coo!’ From the chimney so maybe that is its favourite!

Update: bird freed with the help of kind chimney sweep, who pushed a brush up with pigeon on top in the manner of a lift. Watched from garden as bird popped out of the chimney pot and flew away. Hurrah!

Thanks for all the great tips!

Get Dick Van Dyke around. He'll have the tools

we used to have snakes and let them roam around the front room, they bloody loved going up the chimney.

Now is the time to get a grill across your chimney.

Chimney sweep is going to fit a chimney cowl after lockdown but I am mindful of the behaviour of the naughty jackdaws ripping them off chimneys and dropping them in front of the house! Chimney sweep advises putting the fire on tonight because the birds will stay away from a chimney that is in use.

Actually I remember that in a previous house, a long time ago, I had a blocked chimney. It was caused by jackdaws that had built a nest out of STRING VESTS they had nicked off one of my neighbours’ washing lines!

The first time the chimney sweep came to get a bird out we asked him if we shoukd fit a chimey cowl. his reply was that a bird would get stuck in the chimney about once in a hundred years (still once too many) and it was not worth it.

less than a week later....

The first bird was a pigeon. The second was a collared dove,

cowl fitted after that.
