Did you have the BCG vaccine?

So there's been lots of media outlets mentioning the weak link between countries that have the BCG vaccine still on their schedule and low incidence/fatality of COVID, with countries that never had BCG (Italy/US) on their schedule having high incidence and fatality. I'm not really debating that, obviously much more research is needed. The general theory being the BCG jab boosts your overall immunity, or provides a blueprint for combatting other unrelated pathogens, particularly just after its given (which they are trialling on healthcare workers in Australia).

The question was posed to Michael Mosely on Twitter and he said well everyone in UK has had BCG and we have high incidence/fatality so that link can't be right. But I wonder how many have not had it here, most under 30s won't have had it unless considered at risk, but the rest of us between 30-70 should have had it right?

Except lots of people commented on Twitter that their council cancelled BCG vaccines in the 80s, their parents didn't consent, or they were off school that day. I'm in my 30s (northwest england) and had it, and I think most of my schoolmates did, apart from a handful that were either immune (Mantoux test) or scared of needles. Did you have it, or didn't and why?

I had prick test and didn't need it in the 80s. DH had did have it though

My DC weren't offered it, DN in Manchester was.

Crunchymum · 16/04/2020 13:37

We had it in Y7 (aged 12). We are late 30's

All three of our children have had it as we are in central London. It was given before they were a month old for all of them!

Crunchymum · 16/04/2020 13:38

Kids are 7,5 and 2 by the way.

I’m 38, my brother is 36 and we both had it. It was done at school so pretty much everyone had it.

Devlesko · 16/04/2020 13:39

Yes, but it was 40 years ago.

ThePrettyOneX · 16/04/2020 13:43

I (28) had it and my DH (29) and DS (2) had it too. But we are not originally from the UK. I actually never had any lung diseases in general so it may link back to this vaccine

stickerqueen · 16/04/2020 13:43

I have not had any vaccines has a kid my dad was against them.
When I was 22 years old I had the mmr arranged by my daughter's health visitor.
my kids have had their jabs.

georgialondon · 16/04/2020 13:51

I had it and so did my young children. It is still given to all children in London. Mine had it at 6 months

managedmis · 16/04/2020 13:54

I had it, late 30s, also north west England. I remember the pre test was scary too, but the needle was frigging huge.

There was no wimping out and not one person cried in public.

Good old days Grin

Tonemeth · 16/04/2020 13:55

*I didn't because my Heaf test was positive.

Don't know what that means now.*

Pretty much nothing. What they're saying is that if it does help with covid, the affect wouldnt last so many years. I read something like 40 weeks...

Astrabees · 16/04/2020 13:59

No, my GP advised against smallpox vaccination and BCG as my whole family had various allergies.

Melabela10 · 16/04/2020 14:03

I had BCG but I’m born in other country.

The reason it looks like many ( particularly developing counties ) where BCG is compulsory the C statistics is low is because they may have underreported both death and infections rates

musicposy · 16/04/2020 14:04

I didn’t have it because my mum refused consent.

I’ve also had what GP thinks is possible Covid and been very unwell. Not in hospital so a “mild” case I guess. Recovering now but it’s slow.

Titsywoo · 16/04/2020 14:05

I'm 41 and I had it

Meckity1 · 16/04/2020 14:06

My late mother was odd about vaccines (have posted elsewhere). I had the TB innoculation at three days old, never had the needle test to see if it stuck.

So annoyed. I was seriously considering getting son vaccinated for TB privately and I was talked out of it. They wouldn't do it at the GP's surgery as we didn't check the right boxes and I sort of understood, except we regularly shared buses with people who did tick the boxes and would have qualified and darn it I wish I had been more persistant.

Pollyputthepizzaon · 16/04/2020 14:07

I’m 33 and didn’t have it as we lived abroad for 2 years which corresponded to the years in the U.K. I’d have had it. When we returned to the U.K. I never had it.

whataballbag · 16/04/2020 14:08

I'm 28 and had it at high school

JudgeRindersMinder · 16/04/2020 14:10

I had it in 1983/84 ish when I was 13/14. I don’t remember the injection being painful, but the lump afterwards-if anyone came near you “MY ARM WATCH MY ARM!!!”

thebearwentoverthebumble · 16/04/2020 14:12

I'm 33 and I also had it at school. My 1 year old also had one at a few weeks old as it was offered to us at the time.

amazedmummy · 16/04/2020 14:15

I believe I was the first group not to have it. I'm 27.

DoTheNextRightThing · 16/04/2020 14:15

I'm sure there was a post about this before.

Yes, I've had it. I'm 24 so I wasn't meant to get it. Had to under exceptional circumstances.

Mucklowe · 16/04/2020 14:18

I'm 39 and had it in school when I was about 11. I'll never forget it, as one girl completely freaked out and had to be chased around the school by the nurse!

zsazsajuju · 16/04/2020 14:19

I somehow missed it at school (I remember others getting it, I’m in my 40s) but got it as a travel vaccine later. Dds didn’t get it although others in our NCT group (different London boroughs) got it a few years ago.

TwoBlueFish · 16/04/2020 14:24

I’m in my late 40’s and haven’t had it. I moved areas during secondary school (part way through Y7), school 1 did it in Y9, school 2 in Y7 and I’d missed it.

TwoBlueFish · 16/04/2020 14:25

My kids aged 17 & 15 haven’t had it either as it’s no longer routine as far as I’m aware.
