Is there a way to be on the vulnerable list and not get a government food box???

We registered as vulnerable, ticked the "need help" box or whatever it is and delivery slots opened up. However we don't need the government box, just the delivery slot.

So when the first government box arrived, the letter said to re-register and untick the box and now we can't get a fucking delivery slot!!!

There was no number to call? The letter said clearly to re-register and un-tick the box that says you cannot get out to get food.

Surely there is an option for delivery slots but not boxes?

No we are back to square bloody one!!!

Hmmm I registered for my mother in law and get both. I also got a phone call from the local council and the charity they are working with for the boxes. Maybe you could look for a number on your councils social media, I know ours is on there. As for the delivery slots tho I would just wait as it takes a little while once you first register

Woolyback · 16/04/2020 12:12

How do you register for this? My parents are in their mid-80s and think its ok to pop to the shops every day.
I don't think they have received any help or guidance despite both been at risk. They can barely make a phone call never mind use the internet so I would have to register them.

Spam88 · 16/04/2020 12:22

wooly it's only for those in the shielding group.

LilacTree1 · 16/04/2020 12:25

I’m confused

I know a shielding person who refused the government box

But he gets supermarket delivery slot because they cross check with the government shielding list.

Do you need to check if maybe you fell off the list after asking not to get the box?

Woolyback · 16/04/2020 13:14

Thanks Spam. Theres so much conflicting advice

We registered and ticked the option that we need help with food supplies, this opened up the delivery slots.

We also got a government box, which we don't need as we could get a delivery slot.

The letter with the box said to re-register with the government website an NOT tick that we need help with food supplies, which I did

This seems to have closed all the delivery slots previously available to us?

So the option is no delivery slots or delivery slot and a government box once a week. We don't need both? We make use of a once a week slot and the box to go to someone who really needs it

(we are a family of 5, shielding due to vulnerable disabled toddler and the government box only contains essentials so if we relied on that alone we'd still need to shop)

I’m confused

If you’re saying that you can get access to a supermarket delivery then what’s the issue? If it’s unwanted food, Lots of people will want it.

Don’t get yourself stuck in a “no delivery” situation just to be kind.

notapizzaeater · 16/04/2020 13:39

We've got priority access but no food box but there's too many of 'us' so it's still a struggle to get slots. We've managed with neighbours getting us some stuff and local fruit and veg boxes etc

I'm wondering about this too!

We signed up initially and said we don't need help with food, but then saw that people were being contacted about supermarket priority delivery and we didn't hadn't heard anything.
We left it for another week and then reapplied, this time saying we did need help. After a few days we were contacted by Tesco and Asda and after a week, Sainsbury's. We then received a food parcel which we felt so guilty about so we gave it to our elderly neighbour! Straight after we received the parcel I went on to fill in the form again saying we don't need help. Our supermarket priority access hasn't changed, but today we received another parcel - so the gov database clearly hasn't been updated.

Saying that, I can see on the Tesco app the section that allows us to select priority slots, but there's nothing available at all for C&C or delivery for all the dates. So with Tesco I think everything is just gone. Asda still gives me plenty of availability; Sainsbury's I've not even looked at as Asda has been so good.

There doesn't seem to be a government phone number but on the packing slip in the food parcel there's a number for the company that is distributing, so I might give them a call. They deliver early and both times I've found it on the doorstep so haven't been able to say to the driver that we don't need it.

Sorry for the essay!

Ooops on the didn't hadn't

Katinski · 16/04/2020 18:41

I had an email way back. Replied that I was OK atm but I'd get back to them if/when things got dire. They replied OK, so that's how it's been left.

Witchend · 16/04/2020 18:48

Yes, if you unregister, you come off their delivery slot. You need to phone the council and ask to not receive the food box, but stay on the vulnerable list.
We covered that this morning in the support hub. Our support hub will phone for you, so if you have a local one, it's worth asking them if they can do that.

OrganTransplant123 · 16/04/2020 18:49

I wondered the same! I ticked to say I needed help. The slots eventually opened up and we’ve had two supermarket deliveries. Good, just what I wanted.

In the meantime a government box arrived. I then registered to say I didn’t need help. Another box arrived. We tried to refuse it but the guy said just to take it as it’d end up in a warehouse somewhere and no use to anyone.

I now can’t get a delivery slot. I presume it is just due to high demand but I’m worried that it is because I ticked to say I didn’t need help.

I wish I knew how it all worked!!

TenShortStories · 16/04/2020 18:53

Have had a similar issue and been unable to stop the gov box coming. A local food bank was very happy to come and collect it from the doorstep though - would that be an option?

OrganTransplant123 · 16/04/2020 18:59

There is no number on the information that came with the box. So do I need to register again so I can get a delivery slot? How will I stop the food box delivery when there isn’t anything to say where it comes from??

We’re rural and I doubt a food bank will make a 45 mins return journey to collect. I’m saving the unwanted stuff for when we can take it to them.

OverlyLeafy · 16/04/2020 20:22

@OrganTransplant123 if I were you I'd just register again to open up delivery priority and then try tackling stopping the delivery afterwards. Or worst comes to worst, use it yourself.

Willjac123 · 16/04/2020 20:28

I'm in the same situation , too, having been offered priority supermarket delivery slots and today an emergency government food package has been left for me. As kind as this is, I am able , and prefer , to order and pay myself for the food I actually want. So I havent tried to stop the food packages as I suspected this would also result in priority supermarket slots being withdrawn .
I've decided to store all packets/jars/tins until the end of lockdown and then offer them to the local food bank
