Do you think the obsession over celeb culture will change after this?

Especially the z list type/reality famous for being famous types?

We will always have famous people of course but the last 20 odd years has really shown a rise in pointless vain "celebrities" who turn up to the opening of an envelope.

As people are home and thinking about the future and the seriousness of this pandemic, celeb twaddle just seems so pointless and nonsense.

Do you think the reality star/pointless celebrity culture has had its day now?

I wish it would, but I too think nothing will change. Before you know it, people will be hooked on the next series of Love Island Hmm

Campervan69 · 15/04/2020 22:57

I wish. We need a more equitable society where the people who are actually doing useful things get paid a decent amount. It's utterly ridiculous how overpaid footballers and other celebrities are nowadays compared to the job that they do.

Vintagehearts · 15/04/2020 23:00

I suppose with social media, these "celebs" will always have some form of platform.

No I don't. If anything, people are bored so they're probably taking even more notice of them.

I've never been that way inclined as they just don't interest me and I could literally pass the whole Kardashian family in the Co-op and not know who they were.

But others feel differently and that's also ok. It's just entertainment.

JumboSausage · 15/04/2020 23:17

We can only hope so...

@WorraLiberty it’s funny you mention the Kardashians - I also could walk straight past them! I might recognise them but I wouldn’t care. I just laugh because I’m not really a celebrity / reality tv follower at all but for some reason the Kardashians have been appearing on my FB feed as articles to click during this lockdown time and it’s basically obvious from the comments and the article that they are desperately trying to get the headlines back on them - a leaked phone call with Taylor Swift from a few years back suddenly in the midst of a pandemic and other dramas. They bringing up old feuds and “leaking” things to be back at top story. It’s laughable, and painful.

I’ve never watched Love Island!

I think it’s making some people think twice, suddenly realising that celebrities actually are really not that useful to society as many think.

What I think is a big shame is how they’ll be rewarded for their donations. Don’t get me wrong, of course it’s great that many (Actors/reality stars/musicians) are handing over great big piles of cash. But for so many it’s pocket change. And then next year they will be rewarded in huge ceremonies for their generosity and hailed as hero’s, titled as ambassadors etc. Meanwhile as usual everyone on the front line (by which I mean EVERYONE else: volunteers, NHS staff, carers, police, school staff, supermarket staff, everyone you don’t see in vital role that keep this country running (literally the people down in the sewers and keeping the power going and keeping the transport moving and everyone else) - will just get this passing mention by famous people of how amazing they think the common folk are.....while they pick up their big trophy and pose for photos and get admired and have probably earnt back what they donated.....

Can you tell the isolation is getting to me slightly 😂😂😂 I’m really not a grump most of the time I promise!

And I do appreciate the millions being pumped in by Bill Gates for a vaccine....

It's supply and demand.

Also, some parents have to look at themselves and ask if they can realistically get it through to their kids that looks aren't everything, fame and attention isn't everything...while uploading a shit tonne of photos of their kids on social media.

They're being given mixed messages from a very early age.
