How many outfits / change of clothes do you have for infant/ primary school age child?

I am currently sorting my kids wardrobes out. My son seems to have outgrown nearly everything at 8 but my dd 5 can still fit into some 2-3 shorts so she has tonnes of summer things, ds hasn't.

He has two draws. About five sets of uniform. A Kalix IKEA cube of underwear and another of pjs. No wardrobe space either. I think has 10 long sleeve tops, trousers and a good 20 t shirts.

Dd has a wardrobe full of various things but she was at nursery last year so needed lots of things back then that still fit her.

How many outfits do your younger school age kids have?

Loads! Way too much. I trade hand-me-downs with a friend (we have opposite age / sex children so it works brilliantly) and then I also like to buy a few bits myself.

Ds probably has 10 pairs of trousers, 8 pairs of shorts, maybe 20-25 tops & t-shirts.

Dd has even more once you factor in leggings, jeans, dresses, skirts etc.

School uniform they both have enough for clean every day of the week.

I love dressing them well and really enjoy seeing them in a range of outfits. It’s not hurting anyone and I pass it on / sell it once we’re done so 🤷‍♀️

I do a hand me down swop too for my sons clothes in exchange for friends dd.

I'm wondering if I need to order more things for my son. I would normally not even debate getting him more but with lockdown I'm not sure. I have more time to wash and put everything away for a start and its tricky online. I miss wondering around looking in the shops

Way too much.
I'm really guilty of buying dd clothes and shoes.
My niece has a dd younger than mine so she gets all of dd's clothes. She has hardly bought her dd anything because of my shopping habits🤣

Our son (10) has:

  • 6 sets of school uniform
  • 4 pairs of trousers & 2 pairs of shorts
  • about 8 t-shirts
  • 6 long-sleeved t-shirts
  • 4 sweatshirts / hoodies
  • 3 sets of pyjamas
And a stupid number of pairs of socks!!

I wouldn't buy anything else, unless he needs shorts. I find they last much longer than trousers as they grow up but not out. My boys grow like inchworms, they get a bit tubby and trousers won't fit round the bum/waist and then they shoot up and all their clothes are too lose with the exception that long sleeves and trousers are too short. Stick to t-shirts and shorts as long as you can as they fit for much longer!

My boys are the same size but for each one I have probably 10 t-shirts, 5 long sleeve shirts, a couple of jumpers/hoodies, 5 pairs shorts and 2 pairs trousers/joggers. Mainly worn on weekends and on holiday - I figure as long as they have enough to do washing once a week, that's enough. Now I can do laundry every day, we could in theory get away with less than half that.

MrsJonesAndMe · 15/04/2020 21:22

DS has about 10 short sleeve T-shirts (bought 2x 5 packs last year before our holiday), 4 long sleeve ones, 4 pairs of trousers and 4 pairs of shorts. Wash daily anyway, so never run out.

Stompythedinosaur · 15/04/2020 22:34

I aim for about 6 of everything. Have only a couple of dresses for dd1 though as she doesn't generally wear them, and there's a few extra bits dm has bought. About 10 sets of underwear and pairs of socks though.

Fatted · 15/04/2020 22:52

I try to aim for seven pairs of trousers, seven t-shirts and seven long sleeved tops (jumpers and t-shirts). Uniform is five of everything, currently sitting in a crumpled heap in the spare room awaiting ironing when the schools reopen.

I like to have enough for the week without having to worry too much about washing. I don't have as many shorts, my DC don't always wear as many even in the summer.

The problem I have with DC clothes is length. DS1 especially grows very quickly. He has trousers I bought at Christmas that look too short already. He is 7 and can still fit in age 4 trousers around the waist, it's just they end at his knees! DS2 isn't quite as fast thankfully.

Legoandloldolls · 15/04/2020 23:51

Thanks for the reply. I think ds has enough clothes right now then. I normally aim for at least 14 of everything but no idea why as I have 4 kids so wash every day. I'm going to sit on my hands and see if he can cope with a few items in a smaller size. We have booked a holiday in July and if we dont go hes not going to be seen out much.

I cut the legs off his h&m patterned joggers to make shorts. I will have retrieved a few more from the charity bag to make some more.

Fatter sounds like you need to get your DCs used to shorts then!! I have the same problem - trousers just don't last because of length. They have shorts that they've worn 3 years running now, that used to be mid-shin and are now above the knee but still fine around the waist. Trousers last maximum 6 months.

Umnoway · 16/04/2020 09:50

They have probably 7-8 pairs of jeans/trousers each, maybe 5 pairs of shorts each, 7/8 T-shirt’s each, 7/8 long sleeved tops, 4/5 jumpers and DD’s have a few dresses and pairs of tights. It’s more than enough anyway.

GreyishDays · 16/04/2020 09:53

14 of everything sounds like a lot. Do you mean 14 bottoms in total or 14 shorts and 14 trousers for example?
My middle two have about five trousers, four shorts, one pair jogger.

Aroundtheworldin80moves · 16/04/2020 09:57

My aim is enough clothes to go camping for 10 days without access to a washing machine.

In reality, lots more than that due to over indulgent grandparents.

Littleshortcake · 16/04/2020 09:58

About seven pairs of boxers each. Five sets of uniform. Ten pairs of socks .

Two pairs of tracksuit bottoms and three pairs of jeans. Five t shirts (lycra type) they wash and wash. They live in them.Three or four hoodies. Two smart outfits. I will get two pairs of shorts each. A denim and sports type. They have two coats each. Everything gets very well worn and some has been gifts so hasn't been to expensive. I don't keep more as we only have one chest of drawers.

MilkRunningOutAgain · 16/04/2020 10:05

Mine are older now (Teenagers ) but always had a lot less of everything than many on this thread! Generally a couple of school trousers/ skirts and jumpers/cardies, 5 school tops, pe kit, and about 3 non- school outfits, though usually 5 or 6 t-shirts, 8-10 pairs of all types underwear / socks and 2 pairs pyjamas for summer and 2 pairs for winter. I did always throw out stuff the minute it got too small though.
