Leaving window open

Living with my mum and think the isolation is getting to us. In my sons room who’s nearly 9 has windows that I lock but are on vent so he still gets fresh air.

My mum thinks I’m ridiculous as If we have a have a fire I’m risking his life and has had a right go at me.

My son has been known to do some silly stuff and doesn’t think about safety. I wouldn’t put it past him to throw toys or something out to watch them fall and I’d be worried he’d go after them.

So what do you do? Am I risking his safety? Should I tell my mum to mind her own?

Do you have smoke alarms?
I have never locked DS windows and he is asd/adhd so always liable to do really silly things but, the risk of being stuck in a burning building & being unable to get out, is a real worry. I guess it just depends on which of those worries is the biggest tbh.

Surely having unlocked windows is more of a safety risk - many more dangerous things can happen through open windows whereas only a fire where the only means of escape is the window is dangerous if locked. He and you should know where the key is though just in case - but he also needs to know that he otherwise shouldn’t open the window (and even in a fire it would be a last resort). So you are right.

We have 2 smoke alarms and he knows where the key is in an emergency. He knows to escape from the window next door which is left unlocked as it opens all the way and would be easier to get out of as long as the fire wasn’t on the landing.

Time to invest in some child proof window locks I think , you can get them that either do or don't need keys .

Does your 9 year old have any learning difficulties etc? If not surely at 9 he should know not to go out of a window or throw stuff out.

The fire risk is minimal, but he doesn't really need the window to be locked.
