"Tombstone auction" ?

Just saw Ed Byrnes show "Spoiler Alert" recently, and he mentioned being at a banking awards do where there was a "tombstone auction" before he went on. Basically tables of guests were chivvied into donating £10,000 a pop towards Save the Children (Princess Anne was there). There was no prize, and no real competition, just a total and individual contributions. After 8 minutes they ended up with a few million.

Anyway, Ed Byrne referred to the event as a "tombstone auction" which he hadn't heard of either. I've had a quick chat with Dr. Google, and they can't help either. Or rather they insist on telling me about "Tombstone Arizona". Which I know is a thing, but not what I was looking for.

So knowing there are linguists and pedants all over MN, I wondered if this is the clarion call you've been waiting for in lockdown.

Do you know what is being described ?

Does it possibly relate to the Tombstones that bankers are given when they work on an IPO? They're normally glass ornaments and etched with the details of the deals.

Not sure what a tombstone auction is, maybe comparing the deals they've worked on £££
