New to Online Banking - How do I cancel a payment that is being taking form my account several times?

Overseasmom100 · 15/04/2020 12:48

so a payment is going out of my account several times a month - XBox!!! DS has only 1 payment a month going out and I can see this is correct. But Microsoft if taking several out every month. DS onto Microsoft but taking hours literally to get through - can I do something on my online current account to block payments from being taken by them? If so how please

how are they taking it out? Direct Debit, Debit Card etc? the options depend on hte mechanism for authorisation of the payment.

user1485155939 · 15/04/2020 12:56

They are taking it from your long card number and have your last 3 digits on the back of your card, the only way to stop this is to contact your bank and put a dispute in with them and if Microsoft have been taking money that they weren't authorised to take your bank will look to claim that back for you. Your bank may want to replace your card to change the information held.

Overseasmom100 · 15/04/2020 13:00

the account is set up on the xbox so not direct debit or standing order set up however microsoft are taking extra payments...I can see from my DS's xbox account it is only taking the one so why it is taking more from my bank account I dont know!

Have you tried the chat option in online banking?

Myneighboursnorlax · 15/04/2020 13:03

I’m not overly familiar with how x box works, but might the additional payments be DS buying in game purchases? Perhaps without realising they aren’t free if your card is already linked.

pleasestoprainingplease · 15/04/2020 13:04

Has your DS purchased anything through a game? Fifa points? Fortnite money? Etc. Is it always the same amount?

FantailsFly · 15/04/2020 13:05

Is it payment for in game purchases? Your DS might not be aware that he’s buying extras - but the payments might be legit. You won’t be the first parent to find this out the hard way.

DontGoIntoTheLongGrass · 15/04/2020 13:05

Yes it could be in-game purchases. Your ds might be buying credits for a game and using your saved card details not knowing it's actually using real money. Check with your ds if he's buying in game credits.

MsAdorabelleDearheartVonLipwig · 15/04/2020 13:07

Yep, it’s your DS. Easily done but you need to explain to him that it’s real money he’s spending!

Really gosh he'll be in trouble then!!!
One payment says realm as a reference

Always either £7.99 or £6.99

Have a google - there are several Xbox games with Realm in the title. Does your son play one of them? If so, then it's definitely in-game purchases...

Fairylillie · 15/04/2020 14:21

I would remove my bank card from the Xbox account (if that can be done) and buy my son a regular Xbox Gift Card instead, perhaps one a month so he can manage his spending himself. Once the card is spent he can't buy anything else, unless he decides to spend his own pocket money on another card.

MorbidMuch · 15/04/2020 14:53

Does he play Minecraft? A search shows me that there is now a monthly subscription service called Realms for this that he might have set up using saved card details.

Perhaps possible that he started a free trial and didn't realise that it was charging you after that point?

TerrorWig · 15/04/2020 15:09

Your bank card has been attached to the account. Remove it immediately.

I’d suggest buying Xbox points and pre-loading the account so he can buy himself stuff until the cash runs out.

QueenofSwearing · 15/04/2020 16:18

It's your card. It's basically like when you make a purchase in a shop or online. You can't stop these payments as it's not a direct debit. You will need to access his xbox account to remove your payment details or cancel your card and get a new one.

TerrorWig · 15/04/2020 23:13

Cancelling the card won’t work for continuous card payments, I’m not sure if this is one of those but you should bear it in mind.

Go into the account on the Xbox and remove payment details.

achara · 15/04/2020 23:22

It might not be relevant but if payment is done through PayPal go to PayPal account and summary click into the payment. If it says manage payment then that means it's on going. You click on this and cancel the payment. Otherwise I'm sorry I don't know.

This will be your house rather soon I think!!!

stickerqueen · 16/04/2020 00:05

you sure he's not making in game purchases? Dd has done this before when my card was attached to her xbox account now I buy her the xbox cards instead of using the bank.

Glittertwins · 16/04/2020 10:22

Sounds like in game purchases to me. If you want to be able to buy him games online, create your own account on the Xbox and set it with a password. You can then leave your card details there for ease. Your child should really have a child only account, also set up on the Xbox, that does not allow in app purchases.
Works well for us anyway.
The accounts can be set on Microsoft Live as well.

MsAdorabelleDearheartVonLipwig · 16/04/2020 14:53

My friends son did this. I think he racked up about £400. My friend was incandescent. She got on to her bank and explained the situation and also spoke to Microsoft and I think she got it refunded.

QueenofSwearing · 16/04/2020 23:53

Because it's possible that he's set up a reoccurring subscription. You need to either access his account to cancel (you can do this by turning his xbox on, then going to settings and payments/subscriptions) or cancelling your card.
