magazines.....will they survive?

Backintime4breakfast · 15/04/2020 07:13

I know monthly ones are planned several months in advance so wont contain anything relevant at the moment....
celebrity ones......ok/ok/heat etc........presumably they cant go to houses for the usual stuff , & celebs aren't going out.....
& they're expensive for what they are (could also get a book for the same price)
& people are going to shops less to buy them ...
So will any survive? which ones?

I order a monthly history magazine which I imagine will be fine. Couldn't give a toss if all the celebrity ones went under to be honest

Princesspickle777 · 15/04/2020 07:30

I couldn’t care less about the celeb mags, I’ve never bought them but have flicked through them when family members have left them out. I don’t see the attraction and would be happy to see them go. I prefer real life story mags which I’m sure will be kept in business.

As long as Viz survives I will be ok.Grin

I think they were on the way out anyway, so probably not. I like craft/ home magazines but this past year or so, every time I've picked one up I put it back because £5-£6 is ridiculous for content/ ideas I can find online for free. Or an actual book with ten times the info for just a little more.

About four months ago, two out of the three large supermarkets in my town reorganised their magazine aisles so that they were a fraction of the original size. I was hoping it was just for Christmas but they never changed it back. Now the magazines that I might have bought aren't in stock in my town anymore anyhow.

Hopefully! Who enjoy a bag full of glossies and gin and tonic at 30k feet?

Hello: I like the party shots
Glamour
Cosmo

Just thinking about the number of jobs that would go if they collapse.

starlight36 · 15/04/2020 10:23

We had that change in our local supermarkets as well. To be honest I was a little relieved as it meant my DC didn't nag for an over-priced comic every time we went in.

I do think magazines that rely on the impulse buy (and attractive give-away) will suffer. Not only fewer people shopping in supermarkets but less people at airports, train stations or service stations. This is when I usually treat myself to a glossy magazine - and give in to the kids demands!

1066vegan · 15/04/2020 10:24

I buy magazines from time to time, mostly history, science, nature, politics or food. I shouldn't think any of them will be affected in terms of content although social distancing might make production and distribution more difficult.

The only genre that I like that would be more difficult to create is travel. I like the Lonely Planet and Wanderlust magazines; it could be a very long time before any research trips can be carried out.

1066vegan · 15/04/2020 10:26

@starlight36 good point about the impulse buying. Most of my magazine buying is (was?) probably done at train stations and airports.

Drinkandknowthings · 15/04/2020 10:29

I used to love magazines - home, celeb, fashion, food. But then I had kids and less time and disposable income so didn’t get them any more. However I discovered Readly. It’s an app and has pretty much every magazine you can think of. I’m not sure how much it is as there are always free offers around (I’ve currently got 2 months for free)

Also most library’s provide digital magazines for free through an app.

toohardforme · 15/04/2020 10:29

I’m using a magazine app instead now ... much better value - I love crap magazines and used to spend a fortune on them stupidly ... can’t get the ones I really enjoy (Simple Things and Oh Comely) on the app but seems to be everything else .

Caramel78 · 15/04/2020 10:36

I used to have the Readly app for my magazines but I was getting eye strain from looking at my phone so much reading them all.
I have a monthly delivery of two real life crime magazines and 1 health & fitness magazine to my door and hope they can continue as always look forward to them

MrsT1405 · 15/04/2020 10:45

I'm retired and live in Spain and Readly is fabulous. I read knitting mags, women mags , gun mags ( frightening) . In fact anything and everything. It's good value even in the uk.

AgeLikeWine · 15/04/2020 10:52

As long as Private Eye survives, I will be happy.

Let’s hope all the awful celebrity magazines go bust, though. I hate the fact that such vacuous dross is produced, written, edited, bought and consumed almost exclusively by women. Surely we should be better than that?

Littlescottiedog · 15/04/2020 10:58

I used to buy Closer and Heat magazines every week and read them over lunch on a Saturday. But I've stopped buying them because I've realised (better late than never!) that they're full of drivel from apparently "close" sources, focussed on female celebrities who have gained/lost weight, with heavy coverage of awful television shows like Love Island. So I stopped about a month ago and don't miss them.

Caramel78 · 15/04/2020 11:00

I also used to buy things like Closer every week when I was in my early 20s. I hate them now as they mainly just write made up crap about Z listers such as Towie and Love Island stars, or have articles highlighting celebs’ cellulite etc. Glad I’m no longer sucked into that sort of damaging nonsense

1066vegan · 15/04/2020 11:27

I just signed up for the Readly free trial thanks to this thread. I can't believe how many magazines they've got. I've added loads to my favourites. Just a bit disappointed that they don't have Private Eye.

Halfstonehomerun · 15/04/2020 11:36

Free magazines from your library through the RBdigital app.

MulticolourMophead · 15/04/2020 12:07

This just reminded me to subscribe to Easy Cook. A paper magazine is great in the kitchen for referring to.

EmpressJewel · 15/04/2020 12:21

I used to buy all the weekly gossip mags like Closer. Now, I read them via the library app as it's free. I wouldn't pay to read them anymore - I don't know who half of the 'celebs' are anymore.
