New Job

Hi All

I've been thinking about this for a while, if I had to get a new job after lockdown, taking into account the problems with the current job market what sectors do you think would be hiring...

I'm currently freelance and think I'll have to get something more permanent to tide us over. I'm open to new challenges!

Any thoughts?

Thanks Smile

Accountancy? HMRC, DWP?

wedoliketobebesidetheseaside · 14/04/2020 23:09

Hi @LouiseTrees

I'm not sure I can stretch to accountancy, numeracy is not my strong point!

I was thinking a public sector job could be an interesting option, like you mentioned DWP, not sure how those types of jobs are advertised?

Maybe a job that would offer training could be another option...

Thanks Smile

Teaching? Particular secondary, if you are able to teach a shortage subject (I see you say above numeracy isn’t your strong point but any science, language, geography) you are basically guaranteed a job with a hefty bursary for training.

It’s not for everyone though.

Search the Civil Service job site for vacancies in the Civil Service, I should imagine there will be lots of vacancies - everything the Chancellor is announcing is requiring work from DWP or HMRC.
The MoD have put recruitment on hold for now but other Govt Departments May still be recruiting!

Elieza · 14/04/2020 23:37

Dwp is not a good place to work. Pick another department.

Supermarkets and food companies, including head office jobs, not just in store.

Thanks for all your thoughts! Smile

There are plenty of areas that will be unaffected in terms of workload and ability to hire. I work in prison/probation and although we are working differently the work doesn't change or stop. Social care in general always have vacancies.

Also some tech companies like zoom, Netflix, google are not affected by the downturn

MissSmiley · 15/04/2020 18:43

You could do AAT and work at the same time, you don't have to add it all up in your head nowadays

wedoliketobebesidetheseaside · 15/04/2020 21:18

Hi @MissSmiley what's AAT??

Maybe it isn't the job for me as I don't know what it stands for 😳😬

Thanks 🙃

AAT is studying to be accountant by doing exams while working as an accounts assistant.

Oh and yeh we use spreadsheets and calculators , don’t need to actually be that good with numbers.
