Hi. Our little one is 5 and half months. We have night time sorted now and she really good in her own cot and room. She really tall for her age so we had to put her in her cot earlier than planned. Though during the day we cant seem to put her down for her naps. I do the same times and rountine as we do at bed time except the bath, but she just wont settle. I keep trying and trying but getting no where. Just end up with a hysterical baby. Only way I can get her to sleep during the day is on me. Any ideas

Put baby in the buggy, lie it back, give it a shugle. If nice weather shugle outside or go for a push round about. Mine all had daytime naps in the buggy but we had a secure back garden to park it up in.

Oh and white noise. Tried that?

Jes1989 · 14/04/2020 13:43

Thanks for this. Yer I've walked for hours before but she wont sleep in the buggy she too interested in seeing everything. Just trees etc but she has to look at everything. We have tried white noise in the past but was worried about her getting use to it. She doesn't have it at night time and sleeps through. Why I'm stumped as her environment is the same as night time but she sleeps then

Can you pull the hood of the pram really far over so there isn't much to see? Only do this for short time whilst she is going to sleep and not when it is hot (as it restricts the air flow and increases the temperature, but short periods are okay). Otherwise what about a light projector which plays music? Something that will distract her and she can lay watching it. This may lead to her dropping off

We had the same issue. I just embraced the cuddly naps and made sure I had phone and a cuppa in reach. By about 9 months he was sleeping more solidly and so easier to transfer to the cot. It's about a 50 50 success rate now at nearly a year old. Sometimes he just needs the cuddles...

My mantra is "this too shall pass."

I have no idea, mine is 5 months old sleeps 7-7, wakes for 3 feeds but settles straight back usually, then during the day I am lucky if he naps for more than 45 minutes.

Embrace the cuddles. At 16 months my son still only naps on me. They're only small for so short a time, and TBH I like the fact I get to sit down with a cuppa and chill out for a bit.

Thanks for all this. Just hard as people always saying she end up clingy if I dont put her down. But she barely likes being held when she awake as she so active, so I enjoy the cuddles when I can get them

Aww, cuddle her if you like it ☺️

But, if you do want/need to move on... I recommend:

  • routine: same times for naps each day, same length of nap (wake her up if need be), same wind down before nap
  • white noise
  • sleeping bag (if you use one)

What's the problem getting dependent on white noise - it's so useful! You can just gradually turn the volume down if you do want to wean off it eventually. But there are phone apps for travel and many adults sleep better with it on, there's no 'need' to ever stop 💁🏻‍♀️

We used the Little Ones awake/sleep times and it worked well. DD is 14mo now, just dropped her morning nap, still snoozing for 2hrs+ in the afternoon & clearly super happy for it. She's been doing her long afternoon nap and sleeping through since 7mo - bliss!!!
