my lovely son (14) has a monotonous deep voice like on Father Ted

My lovely son's voice dropped a while back. It's a very deep bass and monotonous. He sounds depressed even though he isn't and apparently other people have told him the same.

I just watched the Ireland's biggest lingerie section scene from Father Ted and he does sound like the priest with the boring voice.

He's developed unevenly so it probably not completely neurotypical but although it takes him a long time to make friends he does have a nice friendship group. He says "no-one dislikes me" but he can be overlooked.

Do boys "grow into" their voice as they get older? Or is this going to be a problem?

It's not a problem. It's just his voice. People have different voices I can't imagine it's as dramatic a situation as you seem to think.

I mean that in a kind way btw.

Do you mean like Father Stone!?
Father Ted isn't monotone.

I have an almost 14 year old son myself so this is a tangent probably.

He's only 14, it will sort itself out. They do change further.
I have a 15 yr old, at first his voice was a flat rumble that shook the house. It's still deep but has expression now. I can hear the difference in his YouTube videos.

My DS (14yo) also has a completely monotone voice since breaking too - he has Autism though and struggles to regulate so I just put it down to this.

It was always an issue to "read" his tone as a youngster but much more noticeable now.

Reminds me of Eeyore 🤣

It's the priest from the Christmas one.

BeTheHokeyMan · 14/04/2020 13:30

My almost 14 yr old is exactly the same 🙈 I think it's just all part of the voice breaking process it will be a while yet before their voice settles into their adult tone

Maybe it will get more varied as he relaxes into it. He may be subconsciously trying to keep it at one level to stop the sudden squeaky jumps and drops that they get.

thank you, I will keep an eye (or an ear) on it. As said, let's hope he relaxes into it. A lot of it is social awkwardness I think.

He got a glowing report from his English teacher about his insight and creativity and can act - I just don't want the monotone voice to stop people getting to know the real him.
