One day the sun will die

For some reason I wondered what would happen if the sun dies. I looked it up and it turns out that the sun is half way through its life and it will die, by getting hotter and burning itself out in effect. It will also swallow the earth. It is likely to be a billion years before life on earth is wiped out - as the sun gets hotter the water around us will boil etc but it feels really weird to think that one day there will be nothing and no life anywhere.

I think I have freaked myself out during lockdown!

Thanks. That’s cheered me up.

Christ like we don't feel bad enough. Confused

DonPablo · 14/04/2020 13:01

Oh OP, just what I needed. Grin

MagentaRocks · 14/04/2020 13:01

😄 apparently the sun will last for another 5 billion years or so but life won’t be sustainable after a billion. It got me googling all about space, the universe etc and it feels surreal.

Not any time soon though, don't worry!

SoleBizzz · 14/04/2020 13:02

I have wondered if science will be able to stop the suns death.

sadpapercourtesan · 14/04/2020 13:02

I keep reading this thread title to the tune of "One Day My Prince Will Come" from Snow White

Thanks OP Angry

From a yellow dwarf to a red giant to a red dwarf. Invest a penny in a deposit account today and all your ancestors will have their tickets to Proxima Centauri bought and paid for when the time comes.

BrutusMcDogface · 14/04/2020 13:02

In a billion years the world as we know it probably won’t exist, anyway 🤷🏻‍♀️
Neither will we, our grandchildren, great grandchildren, great great great great grandchildren.....so don’t worry about it! Grin

Op you’ve given me a (black humour type) laugh you nutter 😁 Add it to the list
Killer virus
Environmental breakdown
Food shortages

Happy days!

MagentaRocks · 14/04/2020 13:06

I do expect that we will be wiped out way before the sun starts to die from any number of things as mentioned above. Or maybe as a PP says there will be technology that will mean it won’t happen. In any case the world will be such a different place in 100 years let alone a billion anyway.

It's likely there are other forms of intelligent life and other inhabitable planets in the universe, but far beyond the reach of present science. I don't think science will ever be able to overcome the natural lifespan of the sun, but it is possible that future advances will enable humans to reach new planets, so as a race we may be able to decamp somewhere else before the sun burns itself out - that's if we don't destroy ourselves or our planet by other means first.

FreeKitties · 14/04/2020 13:06

Space is infinite, when ever I really think about that I always end up feeling a little odd!

YetAnotherSpartacus · 14/04/2020 13:07

I'm probably paranoid but deep down I suspect that this Coronaviris stuff is actually to distract us from a bigger nightmare such as this.

PerkingFaintly · 14/04/2020 13:07

Monty Python in the same vein...

perniciousdot · 14/04/2020 13:08

Unlikely, given the 5 billion year time scale mentioned above

alliwantisagoodnightssleep · 14/04/2020 13:08

Haven’t we already been in lockdown for a billion years?

tiredanddangerous · 14/04/2020 13:09

The human race will have destroyed itself long before we get to a billion years op.

CatBatCat · 14/04/2020 13:10

Oh, I thought this would be about the newspaper.

ItsABitOfAShitFightMate · 14/04/2020 13:12

It’ll be like climate change on acid.

ElsieDear · 14/04/2020 13:12

We are a tiny speck in the history of the earth. Modern humans have been around for only about 70'000 years. Thousands of years of people living hunter gatherer lives. We have no record of their struggles, loves, horrors or hopes even though they were as human is us right now. They loved their children, ate and drank, laughed lived and cried.

Civilisation has only been around for the past maybe 7000 years max. If we last another 7000 years then that will be amazing.

We are nothing. We will return to nothing and in a few 1000 years there will be no record of us beyond some slowly degrading plastic in the soil.

I find this a comfort.

Does not discount massive asteroid strike, ... I said 'such as' this.

andhessixfeetten · 14/04/2020 13:14

:)

CroissantsAtDawn · 14/04/2020 13:14

Actually this has helped me a bit with perspective. Seeing the big picture. Not the snall room with walls closing in as we prepare for at least 4 more weeks lockdown (I'm in France).

Makes me feel all seize the dayish

CroissantsAtDawn · 14/04/2020 13:15

Alhough seizing the day is hard in lockdown!
