What do you do with recipe cuttings from magazines?

Lockdown jobs!

I have a huge amount of cuttings from food magazines and I have no idea what to do with them. I'm pruning them down to the ones I actually want, but there's still masses.

My sister says just chuck them and Google any recipes I want, but I don't want to do that! Waaaah! Scrap book? Recipe cards? Will I ever actually use them?

What do you do?

I’ve got a folder with recipes in poly pockets. They’re categorised and indexed.

Bezalelle · 14/04/2020 11:08

I write them all out into a recipe notebook, with dreams of my DC one day using it, misty-eyed about their mother's cooking!

It's a bit labour intensive, but I love tooling around with pens and fancy washi tapes, so it's sort of a hobby.

DonPablo · 14/04/2020 11:08

Ooh, @PurpleDaisies, I like the sound of that. A4? Wanna show me a picture?

What's your categories and indexing? I'm thinking cocktails, salads, mains, winter, summer.

They're all veggie because we're veggie.

@Bezalelle I have one of those, from my mom. In fact I have a couple. I cherish them, but they do make me laugh. So much 8os food!

I've gone electronic with a lot of mine, though I do have a box file of random recipes I really ought to get round to adding.

Can you take photo and convert or paste it into a document with plenty of keywords? I also add a few comments such as "added XYZ and that was good" or "cooked better at 180 degrees".

That means that if you have 1/2 a tub of, say, mascarpone you can find all the recipes you like that contain it.

chipsandpeas · 14/04/2020 11:11

take photos of them and keep them in a online photo site like google pics

Oliversmumsarmy · 14/04/2020 11:12

Can’t you put them into categories then photograph them all and email them to yourself.
Then chuck the paper copies out.

maslinpan · 14/04/2020 11:15

I have a massive ring binder I have indexed.
I like seeing all my favourite recipes slightly tatty round the edges, but I am constantly adding to them so I have a cull sometimes before I get completely swamped.

DonPablo · 14/04/2020 11:15

Electronic? I don't know about that, seems quite, modern

A4 size folder from paper base. I used to write them out in a book but then it was too hard to find what I wanted. It bothered me that all my (eg) Indian recipes weren’t together so that’s when I started the folder. It also means I can remove one recipe and put it back and it’s also wipe clean! The other bonus is print outs from the internet go straight in. I should have said, things only go in the master folder when they’ve been made and enjoyed.

We’re veggie/vegan here so they’re grouped by cuisine. There’s a front sheet with each category with all the recipes listed.

MangoesAreMyFavourite · 14/04/2020 11:15

Put them in the recycling, feed them to the cows?
Apocalyptic toiletry needs...

Seriously, listen to your sister.

BarbaraofSeville · 14/04/2020 11:21

I look to see if the recipe is online, which it often is if it was from a magazine or supermarket recipe card. I then save it into copymethat.com. I used to use Pepperplate, but they started charging, so switched to copymethat, which is actually better. Those which aren't on the web, I photograph and save into Evernote.

I've also got a bag full of paper recipes that need sorting, but realistically, I'm never going to make these things, and don't need 20 different recipes for some sort of chicken and veg traybake or brownies, which is what they often are when I look at them, so will ditch as many as I can bear.

Oliversmumsarmy · 14/04/2020 11:22

If you haven’t used them by now then really do you ever see yourself using them.

It isn’t like they aren’t all on line.

DonPablo · 14/04/2020 11:23

@MangoesAreMyFavourite are you my sister? Dude, so mercenary.

Good thread op thank you! Mine are currently languishing in a pile in the kitchen...

PancakePattie · 14/04/2020 11:24

Mine are in a folder with poly pockets. If I try one and it doesn't prove as delicious as it looks in the photo, I can pull it out and get rid of it. I wouldn't be able to do that if it were pasted into a scrapbook.
I have two folders - one sweet, one savoury. Within then, I try to separate starters from mains and puddings from baking as much as I can.

Abbccc · 14/04/2020 11:26

You can buy recipe s scrapbooks with tabs for different types of dishes.

petalpower · 14/04/2020 11:33

I’ve got an index box with different categories. Had it years - it was from Phoenix Cards but they don’t exist any more. I just tear the recipes out of the magazine and put them in the right section.

WhateverHappenedToBathPearls · 14/04/2020 11:35

I've recently started taking photos of them on my phone then getting rid of the cuttings. I've switched to digital magazines now so am taking screenshots as I read.

doodleygirl · 14/04/2020 11:37

I have a folder bulging at the seams - it started life lovely and tidy, indexed and each recipe had its own pocket. Over the years the indexing has been misplaced by shoving the peace of paper into the folder.

I was going to cull and get a new much larger folder but my DD aged 25 told me not too as she has memories of us going through the folder looking for recipe ideas. Smile

Mangosocks · 14/04/2020 11:38

I chucked all mine a bit ago, ones I actually wanted I took a pic of on my phone but mostly I just Google for any recipes now

BruceAndNosh · 14/04/2020 11:42

Same as @PurpleDaisies. I have mine in a big A4 lever arch file in poly pockets.
Most important, get extra wide index dividers that will extend beyond the poly pockets.
I just take out recipe and return it after wiping the cake batter/ soy sauce off it.

DonPablo · 14/04/2020 11:45

All the Mangoes are my sister, stalking me, I'm sure.

I've got rid of all of the magazines I hadn't been through and cut the recipes out that I wanted. Now I have to organise them all.

I mean, I never thought I'd have time to do this. It's quite wonderful!

OP posts:
TerfTerfTerf · 14/04/2020 11:47

I cut them to just the recipe plus a pic if necessary and arrange them on both sides of A4 page and then laminate the page. I have a lever arch file full of savoury, categorised into meat, fish, veg. And a file of sweet. Kids have enjoyed flicking through them over the years, and I only keep recipes that I have actually made. It's a nice memory bank as well.

Puddlesplasher · 14/04/2020 11:50

For the last year or so I've been using Evernote. I take photos of the recipe and save it to Evernote (or the link if it's online)

I have a massive book of cuttings and recipes from friends that I am in the process of putting onto Evernote.
