Raspberry Pi for toddler?

As nursery is closed and DH is on furlough, he has been looking after DD while I WFH. BIL is a computer guy and has got in touch to say that he's heard from MIL that DH id at home with DD all day so has very kindly bought us a Raspberry Pi.

It's a lovely thought but we're a bit stumped as not sure what things we can do with it for her - she's 18 months. We're not really computer minded so was hoping that the lovely people of mumsnet would have done ideas?

Does he have children? I really don't think a Pi is suitable for an 18 month old. My 10 yo ises it to code and create games etc.

It’s a computer OP. One that you have to put together yourself. Definitely not something for an 18 month old!

You would need to install an operating system on an SD Card and plug in a separate USB keyboard and mouse. Then, you would need a cable to hook it up to a monitor. Once done, you can then use it like a computer for websites etc. although I’m not sure what websites you will be wanting for your 18 month hold, ha ha! Bless your BiL Grin

My fat arse thought you forgot the E at the end, I was about to say of course it's fine for a toddler.

Absolutely no idea about this computer thing though.

Erm what? A Raspberry Pi isn't really suitable for a toddler. Does he have kids 😳

DixieFlatline · 13/04/2020 21:12

You seem to be assuming he got it to make the toddler’s day more interesting rather than your DH’s. Grin

No. My gd has one, she's 9, she struggled with it.
An 18 month old needs bricks, balls, books, musical stuff.

Definitely not for a toddler. DS(14) got one for Christmas

:o

Unless your 18 month old can read, write and understand computer code I don't think it's quite the right thing for her!

Something like this might be better...
