What is Aldi like really?

There's a rumour of an Aldi store opening in our town (obvs not for a while now I imagine with everything that's going on at the moment), and I'm wondering what Aldi stores are like to shop in. Are they really much cheaper than say Morrisons? And are they like 'normal' supermarkets inside or are they more like Costco?

the aisle of shite

not heard it called that before! Grin Grin Grin I dont look down there often but did once pick up some fairly decent walking boots reduced to £5.

browzingss · 13/04/2020 20:49

I don’t have an Aldi nearby either, but I live in a large city so have visited one before. I wasn’t super excited and left empty handed as nothing looked tempting.

They do have this chocolate chip brioche loaf which I really want to try

Gwynfluff · 13/04/2020 20:51

Staff are friendly and I use the packing shelf as I buy loads. Still out of there in about 35 minutes.

Pimmsypimms · 13/04/2020 21:00

I love Aldi and have shopped there for years (sometimes go to Lidl for a change)
I save so much money on a weekly shop, I honestly don't think that we could afford to buy the same amount of food on a weekly basis from Sainsbury’s or Tesco's.
Also, my dd who is 15 likes branded crisps and snack bars for school so I'll do a weekly shop in home bargains too (lucky for me they're next door to each other) we save an absolute fortune!

EventRider1 · 13/04/2020 21:00

We always do our food shop in Aldi and never struggle with variety or quality of food and it is so much cheaper than the likes of Tesco and Sainsburys. The middle aisle are lethal though and I always end up walking out with something completely random that I don't need.
I had to do our weekly shop in Tesco last week as I didn't realise Aldi had shut earlier due to adjusted opening hours. I felt I shopped really carefully and got about half of what I would normally buy in Aldi as we still had a few frozen meals at home yet my bill came to £50 which is more than my normal Aldi shop and if I am being honest, I felt like I had been mugged!

abitoflight · 13/04/2020 21:02

I've been an Aldi shopper for a few years. Mainly as it so fast to get round all the aisles and I cba with huge supermarkets
Get most stuff there but I go to Waitrose to get stuff I can't get there like smoked paprika, panko breadcrumbs etc
For those who say fresh stuff goes off, it doesn't IME. My baby spinach dated 3 April was not at all slimy and fine to eat on 10 April (I normally shop for food in bits 3x a week but obviously not now)

H1978 · 13/04/2020 21:03

It can depend on the area, ours is an absolute mess and I hate shopping in there but the prices are cheaper than most mainstream supermarkets

I have a ‘brand snob’ family so there’s not much for Aldi for us Grin

IKEA888 · 13/04/2020 21:06

some things are good.
some things are cheaper
A v few things may be better value.
quality can be variable.
some things like fruit and veg are more expensive
can't get everything you need
I love a few things but can't do a full weeks shop

Ipadipod · 13/04/2020 21:11

I always shopped at Sainsbury’s but it was getting too expensive, so I tried Aldi . I now cook ‘from scratch ‘ instead of relying on ready make stuff . My jaw nearly hit the floor the first time I did a big shop there that cost £33.00 , I would normally have paid around £70 .

Vinorosso74 · 13/04/2020 21:12

The online nearest me is an Aldi Local so fairly small and no car parking so not great for a big shop and minus the aisle of random crap. Before coronavirus I would go in every week or two as I was nearby for nh weekly volunteering shift. I couldn't do a full shop there but would get quite a bit and save a few quid.
I love the names of the copies Norpak butter and Seal biscuits.

Ipadipod · 13/04/2020 21:13

Also , Aldi tiger bread is fabulous !

TheEndIsBillNighy · 13/04/2020 21:20

I don’t enjoy the experience at the older stores I’ve been to, but the recently opened branches are really bright and airy, with wide aisles. It’s a nice shopping experience (although the till situation is stressful!).

The quality of food and products is really good, but I couldn’t personally do all my shopping there.

Daisiest · 13/04/2020 21:21

Ours is excellent, we saved enough money last year after swapping from Tesco, to be able go to New York for new year.

Nsky · 13/04/2020 21:26

Love Aldi, find their best premium cat food , very much like purina one, half the price, looks like for like ingredients wise.
Get a few extras from elsewhere, very happy tho

userxx · 13/04/2020 21:28

I've always loved Aldi, been shopping there for 10 years.

GiantKitten · 13/04/2020 21:34

@Viviennemary

I hate it. If I go to a shop I want the thing I bought last week to be in the same place if I want to buy it again. And I want to buy brands I recognise

Unlike all the big supermarkets Aldi never move things Confused
Well, IME, it happened once, when they refitted the entire store, but that's it - unless you're talking about the WIGIG offers?

Apart from a very small group of specific brands (Millicano, Felix cat food, Fairy Platinum, Method cleaners, Head & Shoulders) I'm happy with anything. Which are the brands that matter to you?

doodleygirl · 13/04/2020 21:37

It’s a supermarket, what do you think it’s like. Hmm

Reversiblesequinsforadults · 13/04/2020 21:46

Aldi is my go to for the weekly shop. It's a third cheaper than Asda and the quality of the meat is much better. Things I like are Serrano ham, brie, chocolate, wine, vegan burgers... all sorts, so it's not all very basic. The fruit and veg is good and they pay all the workers the same. The nappies were the best! when we needed those too. I like the smaller shop as you don't have to choose between 25 different types of pasta with 7 different brands, which I find overwhelming. You do need to be prepared at the till though. I recommend 3 huge bags in the trolley before you wheel it round, then you can throw it in the right one - fridge, veg, other is my system. I now find Morrisons far too inefficient!

kevintheorangecarrot · 13/04/2020 21:56

I've been an Aldi shopper for years and I find them absolutely fine. Cheap and cheerful and always manage to make breakfast/lunches/dinners from simply buying stuff from Aldi's. I never shop anywhere else (went Asda the other day for a change but I preferred Aldi)

Bookworm75 · 13/04/2020 22:04

doodleygirl Supermarkets vary which is why I'm asking, no harm in that is there?

PotterHarryWitch · 13/04/2020 22:17

Love Aldi. Much prefer it to Sainsburys as you come out with double the bags as it is so cheap.

RoseMartha · 13/04/2020 23:44

I prefer Lidl . There seems to be more choice and range of products there. But do not do full shop there.

Aldi is ok. Never done a full shop there either. I usually find if I stick to tesco basics it is just as cheap as Aldi.

rainingcats · 14/04/2020 00:45

we have three Aldis within a five/ten minute drive of our house! I like them for cupboard things so biscuits, cereal, bread, sauces, beans ect and cleaning products are good as well. Nappies and wipes are good if you have a baby (although we buy pampers to use at night as we find Aldi nappies do leak over night!) we tend to pop in at the start of the month and stock up.
Although good value I find meat and fruit and veg doesn't last as long as when I buy from Sainsbury's or occado - it's fine if your on a budget and can freeze bits to keep
Fresh but I would rather pay a bit extra to know that things will last me the week.

ClientQ · 14/04/2020 00:50

I tho k it depends on your local store too. Aldi near me is awful but I do like the cleaning products
The Lidl however is really nice and I've just spotted they're building a new one 3/4 of a mile from my house (yay!)

lovelyupnorth · 14/04/2020 07:31

Aldi is awesome we use it alongside local butcher and greengrocer. Can’t fault Aldi never had an issue when we buy their meat or veg, their cheese is awesome

Wouldn’t bother with any other supermarkets.
