Anyone changed their name by deed poll? Can’t find all the answers online - is it a pain in the arse?!

I want to change my surname to double barrel it. I’ve looked up cost and know I need to change my passport but I wonder how easy it is after that. Do you change birth certificate? Once you’ve changed it by deed poll is it easy to change with bank etc? If I choose not to officially change it can I just start using another name at work etc? Any experience or help welcomed - I’ve looked it up but it only tells me the initial first steps to take. Thanks Smile

@CanICelebrate, apologies for not responding sooner. @ElizabethinherGermanGarden's advice covers it all. It is all very simple and straightforward. You can take as long as you want and even if you make a mistake you can just change it again.
The only problem I can ever see is if you have airline tickets booked in one name and change. For some reason they want to charge crazy fees for changing the name on a ticket.

Google 'deed poll', you don't need to pay.

Once I got mine I changed my passport first and then took both passports places to change my name.

Legally you can just start using a new name as long as it isn't for fraudulent purposes.

As you are going from maiden name to double barrelled you probably don't need the deed poll, you already have a record with your marriage certificate and birth certificate

I did this. It was so easy! It cost 25 quid via Deed Poll online. They send you a certificate which you photocopy to send to the bank, government departments, etc.

Cookies47 · 16/04/2020 06:33

Don't pay for a template online - there is no difference at all in doing it yourself for free!

CanICelebrate · 16/04/2020 08:58

@sashh I’m going back to my maiden name to double barrel it - would I need a deed poll for that?
I’m currently Mrs X and used to be Miss Y. I regret changing my name and want my family name back so want to change to Mrs Y-X keeping my married name but getting maiden name back too.

@BurgerOnTheOrientExpress so to change my passport will I just need to deed poll and my birth and marriage certificate? I currently don’t have anything booked in my name as I’ve cancelled all my plans this year due to coronavirus so I guess it’s a good time to do this!

A point, if you ever need to prove this at some point in the future, registering with the central law courts ensures that the record is is kept by the National Registry Office and is retrievable.

DH and I got married in '78 and armed with a flimsy bit of paper with a statement on it, signed by witnesses, we headed off to The Strand. We were doing what solicitor's clerks do. Going from department to department, getting stamps put on it. Etc. Quite a lot of offices to visit, but interesting. Oh, this was to change DH's name to our new double barreled name, backdated to the day before the wedding. We were advised this would be the most convenient way to combine our names which was quite unusual in those days.

Fast forward 30 odd years and I needed to prove this for a passport application but the flimsy paper was missing.

Because of the way we had changed our names, there was a copy at Kew on microfiche. They printed me a copy, validated it, and sent it to me. At a cost of course.

copycopypaste · 16/04/2020 15:23

Piece of cake. I did it. Yes you have to change your passport, driving licence etc but you get legal copies to prove your name change as part of the process, use this then you're done and dusted

BurgerOnTheOrientExpress · 17/04/2020 04:52

@CanICelebratecan
The last time I changed the name on my passport, all I sent was a copy of the deed poll I had made.
Together of course with some of those small pieces of paper with the Queens head on.

A very useful thread. I am wishing to revert to my maiden name (divorce underway but need it done asap for professional reasons) but I also wish to change/add to my middle name/s.I never got round to changing my passport when I got married, but if I change my middle name or add another name will this be an issue?

I will need a deed poll professionally to change so I'm not very confused as the gov website looks very official and not as is being described here... hmmm

ElizabethinherGermanGarden · 05/05/2020 20:59

Whatever you do, don't forget to change your name on the deeds to your house at the Land Registry. It's one of the easiest but I bet it would be an absolute arse if you realised half way through a house sale years later.

ElizabethinherGermanGarden · 05/05/2020 21:00

@CanICelebrate you definitely also need decree absolute to change your passport.

CanICelebrate · 24/08/2020 17:43

Help! I’ve started a new thread. I’ve followed advise from here and online and my deed poll won’t be accepted. I’m in tears as I’ve already changed name with employer and HMRC and now been told by other organisations that it’s not valid

Oh no! Where is your new thread?

CanICelebrate · 24/08/2020 17:55

freedeedpoll.org.uk/what_next

I used this website and the language is ancient! The gov.org website had more basic language but I’m hoping mine will be valid.
