How to get a thorn out of a 3 year old?

DD got a very small thorn in the bottom of her foot yesterday. At the time I wasn’t actually sure was it a thorn or just a little cut so I didn’t mess around with it too much.

Last night she woke up screaming that it hurt and was scratchy. So I’m thinking it’s actually a thorn. Problem is she’s barely letting me look at it - she goes bonkers if I try to even gently touch it.

Short of actually holding her down - how do I get it out???

Soak in bath - if only small splinter rub with nail file - get her to try. If you can see it try tweezers.

Get a bowl of warm salty water and get her to sit with her foot in it as long as possible. Maybe some pain relief too.

If you can open the pores enough it may just work it's way out without you having to do much.

Try flicking it out with a bank card there is videos on you tube showing you how to do it, or tweezers the less faff the better for her

Use a calpol syringe.

You need magnesium sulphate paste from a pharmacy- it’s magic for drawing out splinters etc - painfree!

Bribe with chocolate to stay still? Promise the use of some "magic cream" which will make it stop hurting (put savlon or something on afterwards)

Soaking in a bath might help it float out.

I second the magnesium sulphate

Drinkandknowthings · 13/04/2020 10:52

Is magnesium sulphate the same as Epsom salts? Because I’ve got some of those in the press.

Yep - magnesium sulphate.

I used to do them while they were asleep at that age. They used to hardly flinch although once I took a well aimed kick to the nose, they didn't wake up, and had no recollection in the morning. Grin

My youngest did the same when she was 3 and nothing worked to get it out. She was increasingly agitated every time we tried to get near her, and after a few days I had to take her to minor injuries. They used a cold spray to numb it and somehow got it out with a scalpel and no tears at all.

I’ve got her in an Epsom salt bath and after will try distracting her with iPad time. Really hope to avoid the hospital at the moment!!

This is the stuff you need. It has been the most miraculous product I’ve discovered with 4dc.

You can get it from any pharmacy and it’s about £3. I guarantee the pharmacist would recommend the same! It is t the same as Epsom salt.

Magnesium Sulphate. It’s like a paste. Put it on the area and cover with a plaster overnight. It draws out whatever foreign body is in there and it’s pain free. Brilliant stuff. You could try ordering it online at Boots or another pharmacy if you don’t want to go to the shops.
