Sleep question? Semi conscious feeling / awake all night?

Bit of a random one but hoping someone can shed some light on this.

I’ve never been an amazing sleeper - I’ve always taken ages (often over an hour) to fall asleep - but about 2 weeks ago I was just randomly awake all night. This triggered around 3-4 weeks of insomnia, often with very little sleep for nights at a time, and quite severe anxiety. I went to the GP and they gave me sleeping tablets, anxiety medication and I’m paying privately for counselling (for longer term anxiety issues).

Things have slowly improved (and I’m not often taking sleeping tablets now, unless i’m desperate) but I still have these nights where I don’t feel like I sleep at all.

Last night I went to bed at 11 and I’ve just got up, but I feel like I saw 2am, 4am and 6am on the clock. Sometimes I feel anxious but often I just lie calmly ALL night. I have these weird ‘dreams’ where I imagine quite detailed situations but still feel conscious and aware of everything. I feel conscious and aware all night. The next day I don’t feel very refreshed but I don’t feel exhausted either. After 2 nights in a row like this I feel pretty crap. But I’m still working full time in a high stress job and I’ve had no time off.

Do you think it’s possible I am sleeping but its just very night?

Any ideas on how to address this so I feel like I’m sleeping more deeply?

There are apps on your phone to check if and when you are sleeping. I'm not sure what they are called so hopefully someone else will comment.
