Do I need to throw this food away?

Cooked a roast chicken dinner yesterday, took the remaining meat off the chicken and put into a bowl and covered it. Forgot to put it in the fridge. It's been on the side in the kitchen since 8pm, remembered it's at 8am.

Looks fine, smells fine, cold in the kitchen, so much chicken left!

Also a plate of roasters, leeks, spinach and carrots and onions were covered and left out too.

Thanks

I'd eat it, I did similar the other night and left it out and realised in the morning. Popped it in the fridge and then had it for lunch, just cooked it through well!

Chewbecca · 13/04/2020 08:43

If it was cool in the kitchen, I wouldn’t throw it.

maddiemookins16mum · 13/04/2020 08:43

I’d stick it in the fridge with the veg and make either a big vat of soup or a big pie with it all.

Totally fine, I wouldn’t even give it a second thought.

newmumagainn · 13/04/2020 08:44

That was my plan. DH has chucked the lot and keeps reading different websites telling me why he was right to do so - just annoying as if he didn't want to eat it, I would have. He chucks things away if the sell by has gone even if it looks and tastes and smells fine.

Absolutely fine

BarbaraofSeville · 13/04/2020 08:50

Your DH is being ridiculous and I would have been furious. Who throws away perfectly good food on the advice of extremely overcautious food safety advice aimed at businesses who have to assume that a tiny minority of their clientelle may be vulnerable so need to follow way over the top food safety rules?

A good proportion of the food that I eat has been left cooling overnight at room temperature and I've never had food poisoning in nearly 30 years of having my own house.

YeOldeTrout · 13/04/2020 08:54

smell & taste test for me!

We do that occasionally & never had problems. But our kitchen is on the cool side.

MaxiPaddy · 13/04/2020 08:55

Mumsnetters will tell you to throw it away, but honestly, I'd eat it.

MaxiPaddy · 13/04/2020 08:57

Ooh, cross post. I guess mumsnet is braver than I thought!

userxx · 13/04/2020 08:58

I'd be fuming with your husband. Food waste makes me so angry.

shineaflight · 13/04/2020 09:04

Ffs, it would've been fine

TeapotCollection · 13/04/2020 09:08

😮 I’d be furious with him, it would have been fine. What a waste!

Greendin · 13/04/2020 09:10

I've done that a few times and it's been fine, I haven't poisoned anyone yet.

BarbaraofSeville · 13/04/2020 09:19

As well as the waste of money, and food in general, I would be cross about the wasted effort.

I find a roast quite a lot of effort to cook (no, you don't just stick it in the oven and forget about it as people often comment, there's all the veg, roast potatoes and gravy to prepare and cook too) but it does lead to leftovers, which means that you have another meal without having to cook. Sounds like there's at least enough left for another meal, possibly two more meals if there's only two of you, so I'd be asking him what he's planning to shop for and cook, as I wouldn't be lifting a finger.

FusionChefGeoff · 13/04/2020 09:21

I would go mad if DH did that. And yes, it's the effort not the cost not to mention the circumstances we are in at the moment!!!

ShakespearesSisters · 13/04/2020 09:22

I've just put my foil wrapped lamb in the fridge that I forgot to do last night. We will be eating later.
I generally leave stuff out overnight and fridge it in the morning as was told not to put hot stuff in the fridge and it's often still warm when I go to bed.

topcat2014 · 13/04/2020 09:25

It will be fine. Especially the veg.

justanotherneighinparadise · 13/04/2020 09:26

I’d nuke it and eat it but probably wouldn’t feed it to the kids.

Jellycatfox · 13/04/2020 09:28

I would eat it, I can eat pretty much everything. But I wouldn’t feed it to DH or children as they are not like me.

lynsey91 · 13/04/2020 09:40

Even if your husband was worried about the chicken why the hell did he throw away the potatoes and veg?

I would be absolutely fuming. I hate food waste and there is no reason for it. No food is wasted in this house.

sellthesizzle · 13/04/2020 09:41

I'd put it in the fridge and eat it for a meal later. Total waste to throw it away. By leaving it out you'll have taken a day or 2 off how long it will last but it hasn't rotted by spending 12 hours out of the fridge.

Your husband is being over cautious and wasteful.

If it looks ok and smells good - it's fine to eat.

TeddyIsaHe · 13/04/2020 09:42

Time for your husband to get in the bin. What a waste!

stakeholderwizz · 13/04/2020 09:44

Ffs what a ridiculous waste, it it doesn't smell and it's not mouldy it is fine Hmm

coconuttelegraph · 13/04/2020 09:45

Your husband is an idiot, I find it hard to believe that there are adults who think food has to be thrown away in those circumstances.
