What’s the bone that sits just where your underwire is

So under your breast where your underwire sits. Not the wire that sits between your breast a. Does anyone know what this bone is or if it’s muscle?

I have hurt myself. No idea how but in quite a bit of pain.

Your ribs?

WinterBerry7 · 12/04/2020 22:25

Surely the bone is a rib? I may be totally wrong 😂

Rib cage are the bones but between the ribs are intercostal muscles which can be very painful if injured in some way.

Bluebooby · 12/04/2020 22:26

Is it your bra underwire digging in that causes the pain? If so, that happened to me all the time. I don't wear bras very often now - not because of that. I remember it really hurting though. It usually went away after a day or two or think.

caffeinefix · 12/04/2020 22:26

Rib, sternum or intercostal muscles

GaaaaarlicBread · 12/04/2020 22:26

Your sternum ? I’m currently 20 weeks pregnant and in agony on that bone bit between my Breast. It’s so painful I have no idea what it is

Oaksquarebox · 12/04/2020 22:28

Thank you. I have no idea what I’ve done but it’s bloody sore. It’s not caused by my wires unless I’ve managed to catch it or lean on the wire and bruised something.

I’ll look up intercostal muscle.

Bluebooby no, I don’t think it’s my bra. I took my underwired one off early today and put a sleep one on. It’s gotten progressively worse this evening and moving is painful.

I recently had Costochondritis (I think I have it again actually) I'm not sure I remember 100% right, but I think its where the cartilage between your sternum and ribs is inflamed through a virus or injury. My treatment was weeks of ibuprofen so not great when pregnant unfortunately

Geepipe · 12/04/2020 22:52

I was going to say what Lola said, you can get a viral infection in that area. Is your breathing ok? Have you sat in a funny position at all today and potentially pulled the muscles?

TheChosenTwo · 12/04/2020 22:53

What kind of pain is it?
Does it change depending on breathing in or out?
Intermittently I have a pain where I can’t breathe in much because I’ve felt a crippling tightness followed by an acute pain in that area. It usually clears within 10 minutes of some very controlled breathing, I muster up the courage to do a big inbreath and something goes ‘pop’ and I’m all fixed again.
Happens a couple of times a year. I went to a gp once after I had to pull out of a spin class mid way through as I couldn’t seem to draw in enough breath. If wasn’t anything serious, something to do with a tight diaphragm getting caught somewhere on something... I don’t remember clearly now but it was explained away.
Can you get into a comfortable position?

mamansnet · 12/04/2020 23:06

I get it a lot if I've had a cough that's lasted a few days. Sometimes it just hurts to move, never mind cough or sneeze.

BillieEilish · 12/04/2020 23:15

@GaaaaarlicBread I had exactly this, I wento hospital in the end! They scanned me and even putting the scanner thing on was utter agony.

It turns out it was a 'hiatus hernia' that I was born with. Millions of people have them. But when your body is going through a change or something, they flare up, then go back down. I had no idea I head this.

Mine has been fine for the following ten years Grin

GaaaaarlicBread · 12/04/2020 23:40

@BillieEilish oh wow ! I’ll keep an eye on it then as I don’t really want to go into hospital at the mo, I’m hoping it’ll be gone by tomorrow I’ve drank some cold milk so if it’s heartburn it should go but if not I’ll call my midwife on Tuesday . Thank you! X

GaaaaarlicBread · 12/04/2020 23:41

Sorry OP for jumping on the thread but yours just sounded similar to me! X
