So bloody chuffed I have a robin nesting in my garden

Title says it all , I adore birds and have a bird bath that I keep clean and topped up for them . They use it all the time .
We live semi rural as have fields one side of us and live in a small village .
I do feed the birds 7 fat balls a day so feel I am finally being seen as a safe place for them to nest .
Whenever I am in the garden sparrows , Blue tits and robins are watching my every move .
The robin still seems to be building her nest as been stripping the old flowers off the hydrangeas for nest material and building it in the honeysuckle by the front door
I have put a pile of lint from the tumble dryer out for her but not sure if it's ok for them .
Any wise bird loving mumsnetters know if that's ok ?

Congrats on your robin but this says lint is dangerous.

GinnyStrupac · 12/04/2020 15:49

Don't use lint, OP. Especially in your location, there will be plenty of natural materials for nesting.

billhubbard · 12/04/2020 15:49

@Appiandterri Thank you so much , I should have looked online myself . Just off out to remove it 😁

And keep up the good work, feeding, watering and enjoying your birds!

I absolutely get your joy - we are rural and are lucky to have lots of varieties nesting, including sparrows, robins, nuthatch, thrush, blackbirds and - most excited about this one - wren. I have to admit they're not as well catered for as your birds though - all those fat balls!

billhubbard · 12/04/2020 16:08

@GinnyStrupac That's so nice that you enjoy the birds as much .
Think we get through so many fat balls as the bigger birds like to feed as well . I don't mind as mole valley farmers do 150 fat balls for £10.99 so not expensive.
When all this corana shit happened I was stock piling fat balls .
Trust me I'm fine for a while 😁

We get a few visitors - blue tits, hedge sparrows, starlings, blackbirds, magpies, a couple of crows, pigeons and a couple of collared doves / wood pigeons, Fat Bob and his missus.

So bloody chuffed I have a robin nesting in my garden
billhubbard · 12/04/2020 16:22

@iklboo I love wood pigeons, they always look so healthy and happy 😁

Oh and just a small boast , I do get green woodpeckers and spotted woodpeckers on my feeder 😁👍

iklboo · 12/04/2020 16:33

They always make me think of vicars Grin

GinnyStrupac · 12/04/2020 16:37

Wow, OP, you're lucky with woodpeckers. One of the cheeriest things we've ever had was a flock of long-tailed tits - they looked amazing, like a feather duster, and loved fat balls. Sadly we haven't seen those for years now.

What do you put out as well as water and fat balls? We've stopped putting peanuts and raisins out now before it's chick time, so are putting out sunflower hearts and no grow mixed seed instead.

misscockerspaniel · 12/04/2020 16:55

Baby long-tailed tits are the sweetest of birds, a brood of them is quite happy to fly around your head. I am lucky to have blackbirds, sparrows and robins (and others) living in my garden. Wrens are nesting and I get told off each time I venture outside, and a pair of wood pigeons have decided to nest in a hedge alongside the sparrows. I don't know how the sparrows feel about that but the wood pigeons have made a huge hole, getting in and out.

SarahAndQuack · 12/04/2020 18:18

I love robins! We have lots here and they are so full of attitude and personality.

We had, oddly, woodpeckers at our feeder in a very tiny garden in a city centre. I would not have expected it. Not seen them since moving to the countryside, though I do hear them.

We get mostly robins, bluetits and coaltits, bullfinches, nuthatches, sparrows and dunnocks, and wrens. The wrens like nesting in the holes in the walls of the outbuildings. I wish there were a way to stop the stupid pigeons, but no such luck.

We've also got baby owls, not in our garden but nearby, and I love seeing (and hearing!) the babies growing up.

SarahAndQuack · 12/04/2020 18:19

And YY, baby long-tail tits are adorable!

We've got a feeder right by the kitchen window and I love the swoop-and-drop way they fly up to it.

Ted27 · 12/04/2020 18:24

I have a resident Robin on my allotment, he always comes for a chat when I arrive. We have become good friends.
We also seem to have a new arrival at home between our and the neighbours garden. She thinks it's her deceased uncle who was my neighbour for 20 years come back to say hello, which I think is a nice idea

billhubbard · 12/04/2020 18:29

@GinnyStrupac I just put fat balls and water , birds quite lucky here that most gardens feed them . Mind you I feed them same time each day and if feeder empty they are sat waiting fir me 😁

billhubbard · 12/04/2020 18:33

@Ted27 How lovely that robin is in your allotment.
I do think robins are giving us blessings from the the other side .
Mind you my robin makes me jump as he lands on the fence with such a noise right next to me , I nearly bloody wet myself 😁

We've got a robin nesting in the garage and it makes me happy, too!

billhubbard · 12/04/2020 18:35

@SarahAndQuack how amazing, would love owls 😁

@BlessYourCottonSocks so happy I'm not alone in my bird happiness

DeadBod · 12/04/2020 18:48

We have a nesting Robin as well. We live in quite a built up area so I'm really chuffed. I love watching them go back and forth.
We've had a bird box on the garage for years and had blue tits house hunting from time to time but with no takers. Dh has now moved it to see if a different location will make a difference.
You're so fortunate to have woodpeckers.

AdoptedBumpkin · 12/04/2020 18:52

Love robins. Please share photos of you manage to snap some.

billhubbard · 12/04/2020 19:01

@AdoptedBumpkin I will do .
I also have a blue tit problem , always had a mirror on fence with plants all round it , this year the blue tits have been banging against mirror thinking it's an enemy , odd that it's not happened before .
I have covered the mirror with towels but noticed this morning they were doing the same on car mirrors 🙄

SarahAndQuack · 12/04/2020 19:48

They are great fun, @billhubbard! They sit on the chimney and hoot, and you can hear it echoing all the way down.

We had jays one year, and they used to bring all the babies into the garden to practice flying. It was lovely.
