Seriously- I cannot get this right...

Lowering room temperature eggs into boiling water- how long for a set white and runny yolk? I have just ruined 4 eggs!😩

I use an app called egg timer, perfect every time!

Appiandterri · 12/04/2020 11:07

Depends on the size of the eggs.
I do 6 mins for medium eggs put in boiling water but they are straight from the fridge

anonymouse · 12/04/2020 11:08

Put the eggs in cold water. As soon as you see it start to boil count 3 minutes and then take them out.

I also do 6 mins straight from the fridge and they're just right Smile

SegregateMumBev · 12/04/2020 11:08

Put eggs into boiling water. Once it has come to a rolling boil, turn the heat right down and cook for 3 minutes. Medium size egg.

hellsbells99 · 12/04/2020 11:10

I put mine in boiling water and cook for 5 mins

dementedpixie · 12/04/2020 11:11

Googling suggests around 4-6 minutes. How long did you do yours?

ShowOfHands · 12/04/2020 11:12

6 minutes start to finish is our rule. Never fails.

Saisong · 12/04/2020 11:13

From the fridge 4 eggs in boiling water. Exactly 3 mins, then turn off and leave in water exactly 4.5mins then remove and cool immediately under cold running water until they are handleable.

TeddyIsaHe · 12/04/2020 11:15

I do room temp eggs into boiling water for 3.5 mins for medium, 4 for large.

5/6 mins for room temp eggs will be hard boiled.

AnyFucker · 12/04/2020 11:16

Large eggs. Lower into bubbling water. Cook 5 mins exactly. Immediately run under cold water. Perfect.

opalescent · 12/04/2020 11:18

I did 4.5 minutes for room temperature eggs and they were way under done. Thank you all!

5-6 minutes if you are putting them straight into boiling water
3 minutes from when the water starts boiling if you're bringing the pan to boil with the eggs in

ScissorsBike · 12/04/2020 11:26

Put eggs in cold water and bring to boil. At that point, remove from heat completely (with lid on). After 4 mins, perfect runny eggs.

TeddyIsaHe · 12/04/2020 11:39

Whatever you do don’t microwave underdone boiled eggs! Learnt my lesson when I opened the microwave and they exploded forcefully across the kitchen. Took weeks to get the fried egg off everything!!

TeddyIsaHe · 12/04/2020 11:39

*dried egg

planningaheadtoday · 12/04/2020 11:44

Eggs at room temperature

Shallow pan and hand hot water to cover the eggs

Watch like a hawk until the begin to boil.

Timer set to exactly three minutes for medium eggs.

Turn heat down a little so they don't vibrate and crack.

At precisely three minutes take out of the water.

Eat immediately.

planningaheadtoday · 12/04/2020 11:45

Have you got really fresh eggs? This can make a difference.

Really fresh eggs take ages to set.

Calyx72 · 12/04/2020 11:49

These things work like MAGIC

sashh · 12/04/2020 11:59

My mother's tip, and it works.

When as egg is at the solid white runny yolk stage when you lift it out with a spoon the shell will start to dry off. So if you take the egg out and see a dry patch immediately, it is done.

The problem with eggs and time is that eggs are different sizes, if they are fresh there is less room in the air bit.

If the egg is only slightly underdone you can put the 'lid' back on and it will continue to cook for a couple of mins.

I want eggs and toast soldiers now.

Fudgewhizz · 12/04/2020 11:59

What @AnyFucker said - water properly boiling, 5 to 5.5 mins, run under cold water.

PerspicaciaTick · 12/04/2020 11:59

Having failed for years, I now use Delia's method. Room temp eggs into a pan of boiling water. Simmer for 1 min. Turn off heat and leave to stand for 7 minutes. Perfect every time.

PinkMeTickle · 12/04/2020 12:00

Anonymouse - same! Works every time

catinb0oots · 12/04/2020 12:06

Delia method never fails.

Room temp eggs, pricked at the fat end.

Pan of boiling water on the hob. Eggs in for 1 min. Turn off heat, put lid on pan and leave for 6 minutes exactly.

Never, ever fails.

cosmo30 · 12/04/2020 13:10

Depends on the size of the eggs really. But I wait for it to boil fully, and put them in for 5 mins.
