Dead lavender

We've had it each year for about ten years and it's been amazing. However this year it's just a dead wreck. How easy to take it all up? There's loads

Not that difficult. I think the root systems of French lavender are trickier than English or Dutch lavender.

Is it completely dead? Did you prune it last year? Just curious that you say you have lots and it's all dead. English and Dutch lavender can last up to twenty years I think.

SouthWestmom · 11/04/2020 16:53

I think it's French, we always prune it very hard after it's finished. It's just a big leggy and brown now.

This is it now

Lavender shouldn’t be pruned hard. You might have killed it.

SouthWestmom · 11/04/2020 16:55

Oh maybe. I read you should reduce by a third so always did that.

Ours is the same! It's been out every year but not this year :(

SouthWestmom · 11/04/2020 17:25

Oh that's interesting. Across the road there's is slightly more lively but still not out.

And ours - 10th year and it's deader than a dead thing Sad

LittleLittleLittle · 11/04/2020 17:29

I pulled up all my lavender last year after 12 years as it was really leggy. Very easy to pull up.

paininthepoinsettia · 11/04/2020 17:32

I think after 10 years it is time to pull it up and plant anew.

HasaDigaEebowai · 11/04/2020 17:32

Mine too. It isn't happy at all. We planted a lavender hedge about 5 years ago using about 20 plants and this year half of them seem to have died.

MuseumOfYou · 11/04/2020 17:56

They don't last for years and years - may just have reached the end of its allotted time!

Molecule · 11/04/2020 19:02

I live in the Peak District and have never managed to keep lavender going for more than a year ( and was shocked to see it growing like a weed in East Sussex) but this year it is looking super healthy and happy, so guess I’ve found some that likes cold acidic soil. No idea what type it is, I’m still reeling from the fact it’s not dead.

CaroleJeffinBaskin · 11/04/2020 19:14

Maybe the horrendously wet Autumn and winter we had have finished them off? Mine haven't survived the winter either.

SouthWestmom · 11/04/2020 20:06

Ah looks like I'll give up and start again. This is a definite change ; it's always been glorious

A third is far too much, if you cut into the wood you kill it.

Snip off the flowers and stalk and if re shaping, only trim the green leaves gently.

SouthWestmom · 11/04/2020 20:37

Yeah I think it's had it. What a shame, with everything shut! Will did it out and see what's left soil wise

DobbyTheHouseElk · 11/04/2020 20:50

They don’t have huge root system so pulling it up should be ok.

pastacaring · 11/04/2020 20:57

My lavender has died this year too. Such a shame, it's been beautiful the last few years.

Katinski · 11/04/2020 22:06

I've got some growing in a tub -it's in full flower atm. and looking v.healthy - unlike the roses which are thick with greenfly...

slipperywhensparticus · 11/04/2020 22:10

Two out of my four died last year they crumbled when I took them out the ground

Puddlelane123 · 11/04/2020 22:14

I’ve never managed to get any to live past one season. Would love to know the secret of keeping it alive. It is my nemesis!

LatteLarrys · 11/04/2020 22:15

Oh my god - should lavender be fully out by now?

We moved into our new home last August - we have loads of it leading up our garden path and it was just so lovely

It's now flower less and twiggy with not much in the way of growth! I just thought it was too early as I've not had any lavender before ... do we think it's actually dead then?!

LabStaff · 11/04/2020 22:17

My lavender has (mostly) died this year too. I think we over-pruned it.

SouthWestmom · 11/04/2020 22:29

Maybe latte
Mine has survived on a brutal cut back every time it's past it's bloom and then been left to its own devices - never watered it or fed it. Now, I reckon it's been in at least 10
If not 12 years and it's just dead. Some random green but generally several metres of brown
