How do I choose correct curtain width?

Hi the frame of the window (one not up yet) is 140 cm.

What size curtain would I need (I read to add on 15cm each side is that right?) Thanks very much

You need twice the width of curtain to window.

So if the window is 2m wide, you need 4m of curtain width ie: 2 curtains that are each 2m wide.

I believe there is a formula you can google depending on the heaviness of the fabric. Heavy fabric about one and a half times the width, finer material twice the width

Ok thank you. I thought that but then got confused when I read add 15cm. Thanks very much.

Haven't bought the curtains yet but thinking of going for the fern ones from Dunhelm. It will be for a room we don't use. Likely to put a guest bed and desk in. I really want one of the dark green wing chairs and footstool from Ikea Grin

Lovely. I got some a couple of years ago, embroidered with a small leaf pattern; they're very solid.

I think because they are tab top rather than pencil pleat you may not need twice the width because they much less gathered than traditional curtains.

The Dunelm website has an excellent buyer's guide article about its curtains and how to measure to get the effect you want. Well worth a read.

It’s not the width of teh window that matters, it’s the width of pole.

I’d put the pole 2/3 of the way between the top of the window and the ceiling. And wide enough to have the curtains pulled completely off the window.

Then I’d buy curtains twice or even 2.5 times the width of the pole. It’s much better to have less expensive fabric but plenty width. Skimpy curtains always looks cheap, even in a quality fabric.
