BringMeSunshineInMyLife · 10/04/2020 21:40

some are but supplies are running short in some areas

duletty · 10/04/2020 21:40

Depends on the contractor decision- continue with government advice about social distancing (husband an architect)

youngestisapsycho · 10/04/2020 21:41

Yes, my husband is working on one!

AnyFucker · 10/04/2020 21:42

Why ?

AnneElliott · 10/04/2020 21:42

Some are. H is a building inspector and still going it on site.

Samcro · 10/04/2020 21:53

Thanks, I can't imagine how social distancing works

I have one site still going, the rest are shut. Sometimes you can't just stop - the one going is remedial works to a structurally unstable building.

SunnySomer · 10/04/2020 21:56

Depends how many people are working. My home is currently a building site and there is one builder working. He keeps his distance from us and plans to keep working until he runs out of sand & cement.

BringMeSunshineInMyLife · 10/04/2020 21:57

It doesn't-it is amusing me watching them all day and then being made to line up 2m apart at tesco express

Samcro · 10/04/2020 21:58

Near us most are universities, normally dh works via agencies.all ahs gone quiet.

DH owns a house building company.
All the sites are closed. Have been for several weeks.

jcurve · 10/04/2020 22:03

It’s mixed and depends on the contractor. Some are but vast majority of housebuilders, and all sites in Scotland, are on pause. Essential works (ie. to protect an asset or life) are ongoing as usual.

Certain construction tasks are still doable with social distancing e.g demolition work. The problems will come when building supplies aren’t available.

StopMakingATitOfUrselfNPissOff · 10/04/2020 22:11

A lot are closed as the suppliers are closed so they can't get materials

WithASpider · 10/04/2020 22:13

We're working on a College build that is expecting students in September. No choice but to carry on until it's complete.
Others have had a temporary hold to see if continuing is viable (cladding, structural etc)

Most other sites are on hold or skeleton staff till this is over.

Cleaning and social distancing on active sites is intense!

Mammatino · 10/04/2020 22:20

DH asked to go back to a new build site on Tuesday (he's the foreman), they were told maximum would be 15 which would be about doable with social distancing and providing own ppe. His crew called him today up in arms because their company have phoned an agency and there will be 120 on site. The company still haven't officially told their contractors this. Social distancing not possible. This is a big bloody company too. One filthy toilet block, no ppe. His crew are wanting to refuse because they don't feel safe, it's a non essential build and they were already six weeks in front. Some are self employed so aren't being paid but feel their lives are more important than going on site. To be honest I think the residents in the finished block would have the site closed in a couple of hours due to noise. Rock and a hard place, go and earn, stay away, stay healthy, follow guidelines and no job. I understand why the agency people are all willing to risk it though the poor sods.

TattiePants · 10/04/2020 22:37

DH project manages flood defence schemes and all his existing sites are still operational but a new scheme that was due to start has been put on hold. Only key staff are allowed on site and they are strictly enforcing the 2m rule. They are starting to have issues with supplies now.

Samcro · 10/04/2020 23:00

That is the thing, dh is not a young man and personally i think he and me are more important than a wage, don't want to state his trade on here, but for those in the know its a finishing one, trouble is normally there are multiple trades in same space.
So small university bedsit with god knows how many in there,
Add in a lot of the workers are not local so are staying in hostels or cheal hotels, obs thats not happening now.
Tbh I would rather he didn't.

My DH has a trade too and he packed in work quite early. He's also diabetic so on the risky list anyway. We're lucky I guess that we can get by on my salary. I'm not sure I'd be keen to be going to work in those circumstances either tbh

BarbaraofSeville · 11/04/2020 07:44

DP does some agency machine driving on sites and he's supposed to be starting a new contract on Tuesday. Apparently the site had been closed but had some materials delivered this week so are starting up again after the bank holiday.

As far as social distancing is concerned, I would have thought they could manage it most of the time as long as they aren't doing things that require two people to hold things or maybe an apprentice to be closely supervised. It's probably another 'it depends'.
