Crochet - yarn help.

Hi everyone,

Just a quick question about yarn weights.
I wanted to make this jumper, which calls for a weight 4 yarn, which I believe is Aran.
I don’t have any Aran, but so have a tonne of dk. Do you think I could just swap, and use dk?
Or will become too ‘holey’ or be too small?
I was thinking I could perhaps use dk with maybe a 4 or 5 hook, instead of a 6, and make a couple of sizes bigger, eg a 2XL instead of an L.

What do you think?

(DH has already pointed out, it’s getting to be summer now, so will be too hot to wear it, it it will keep me occupied haha)

Thanks 😊

No double knit will be too small. If you use the recommended hook with dk it will be full of gaps/ too small.
You could use dk with a smaller hook, size 4, and adjust the pattern with additional stitches/ rows. If you're not very experienced then try get some Aran/chunky wool. If you're in ireland Springwools are delivering I believe.

It's a nice pattern

Does it give a tension sample thing - you know, so many stitches & rows to so many inches/cms? Make a sample square using the DK yarn & the correct hook for the yarn (probably 4mm), & work out what size sweater you need to make.

PicturesOfCats · 10/04/2020 21:25

Thanks hugsgalore yeah, I thought that might be the answer.

I’m in the Uk, I usually order through wool warehouse, who I’m pretty sure are still delivering, so hopefully can get some there.

Just thought it could be a handy way of using up some of the tonne of DK I have.

I have made a lot of blankets/scarves, but never a jumper or cardigan or anything.

I might give it a go with the DK and size 4 hook, and attempt to adjust it.
I have a yarn roller thing, so if it flops, I can use that to unravel it back into balls I suppose, and then buy some Aran.

The other idea I had was to double up on the DK, and use two strands at one. Although I think I might need to top up of I did that, so might as well just buy the thicker one instead if I’m buying anything

Not that I can see. She has a blog with the written patterns as well (or I’m some of them I think) I’ll see if there’s anything on there about swatch sizes, but I don’t think there was

You could try looking on ravelry to see if there are any similar patterns using DK yarn.

I've done one too many projects without paying attention to the tension so am very cautious now!

JayeAshe · 11/04/2020 09:56

I wouldn't double up on DK, that would be far too thick and stiff for an Aran pattern gauge.

AHobbyaweek · 11/04/2020 09:59

I have substituted before and you should use the right hook for the DK so 4mm usually and do a gauge square. Then work out the difference in your stitch numbers to their gauge so you can multiply the number of stitches up.

MaJoady · 11/04/2020 10:06

Also came on to recommend doing a gauge square, then you can work out how complex the maths will be!

But if you do decide to order, wool warehouse are still open, just taking a bit longer to deliver

springydaff · 11/04/2020 10:08

I'm just knitting a chunky blanket with 5 strands of DK. It looks lovely.

I'd rather have chunkier wool, a bigger hook and fewer switches. Apart from anything it grows quicker Wink

springydaff · 11/04/2020 10:23

I'm not suggesting you use 5 strands! Two would suffice 😁

PicturesOfCats · 11/04/2020 10:49

It would keep me warm though springy haha.

I’m going to give it a go today, I‘ve done a gauge using a 4.5, (To the only gauge size I could find on her site, relating to a different jumper, but same hook size and yarn weight, but I’m assuming her tension is the same in her projects)

Im going to do it in navy and white, as I have lots of that yarn.
If it comes out well, I’ll order some to do the coffee and cream, as o do really like the look of it as it is on the video.

Thanks so much for the advice, Wish me luck!

I'm watching this space!

Please come back to let us know /post a picture of finished article (no pressure 😉)

PicturesOfCats · 11/04/2020 14:47

I will do!

I’ve decided to go with coral and white, the blue was more of a midnight than a navy, thought the coral and white looked nicer.

I will post the finished article 😊
