I moved into my house 3 years ago and have identified most of the garden, but am stuck on what this is ... please can any gardeners out there lend a hand?

Oh and please ignore the jungle underneath it; I haven't cleared out the bulbs yet!! Smile

That berry makes me think that it is a Rowan.

silverrain22 · 10/04/2020 19:47

A kind of cotoneaster perhaps? I have a weeping cotoneaster and the leaves are very similar. Small white or pink flowers in high summer.

Kleptronic · 10/04/2020 19:49

I also think it's a type of Cotoneaster.

Haggisfish · 10/04/2020 19:57

Definitely not Rowan. Also think cotoneaster.

Pavlova31 · 10/04/2020 20:02

Ah Cotoneaster i had forgotten about that .
Thanks for correcting me Smile

Thanks, everyone ... only thing is, I thought cotoneaster was more of a climber, whereas this is definitely a tree?

Actually, scratch that; I just googled "cotoneaster tree" and it seems that if it's trained right it does indeed grow into a "weeping-like" tree

I knew MN would crack it ... really appreciate this, everyone Flowers

I have a cotoneaster identical to that. Our local garden centre prides themselves on their tree like versions. Quite unusual I believe but very beautiful.

yamadori · 10/04/2020 22:54

There are loads of different cotoneaster varieties, and some do get pretty big and can be trained into a tree-like shape.

You don't half have to keep on top of the pruning if they take off though. DH and I spent about an hour this morning bringing ours back into a nice umbrella shape.

Puzzledandpissedoff · 10/04/2020 23:05

Funny you should say that, yamadori; I also got the hedge clippers on mine today to give it a really good haircut. Trouble is, I've since read it should have been done in late winter, so I've probably cut off where the flowers would be and won't get any berries later

Never mind - it grows like crazy and will no doubt recover
