Are dentists doing fillings at the moment?

I was eating a sandwich earlier and part of my tooth came away, there's now a hole. It's quite sensitive although paracetamol is taking the edge off. I've seen that dentists are only open for emergency treatment, would this involve anything other than a temporary filling though? I'm currently in the shielding category so obviously want to avoid going if possible and was wondering whether ordering some temporary filling material and trying to sort it myself for now would be a better idea?

In my area they aren't doing anything. No dentist visits at all. Not even for children in agony with toothache (a poor mum was beside herself on our local FB group as her 6 year old had been crying all night in pain). It's because they haven't got appropriate PPE. They will do phone consultations though and prescribe antibiotics if they think they're necessary.

No. Nothing. It’s been decided that it’s too dangerous

MissisBee · 10/04/2020 18:57

No. Drilling is an aerosol-generated procedure, so risks flying virus all round the room. There are hubs being set up where they can do emergency extractions, but until then, they are limited to being able to provide advice, analgesia and antibiotics.

As someone who was scheduled for an extraction last week this really worries me. My tooth is luckily only twinging at the minute but has the potential for bad toothache and god knows when I will be able to have it out.

You'll have to get a temporary filling OP.

Santaclauswhosthat · 10/04/2020 18:59

No, they're not. Same as most medical staff right now, they're not seeing patients. Keep clapping

You can buy temporary filling material on Amazon. It's only cheap and it works. Very easy to do.

Babdoc · 10/04/2020 19:02

My dentist is shut and any emergencies are referred to the local dental hospital. You could phone yours and ask, OP.

AnneKipanki · 10/04/2020 19:09

No

SuperCraft · 10/04/2020 19:26

Ok thanks all, will order some filling and hope it will be ok until dentists are able to safely work again. Will call my dentist for advice if pain continues.

You can buy the temporary filling stuff from some chemists, I got it in a large Sainsbury's.

I'm having dental issues too, I started a thread about it. The dentist I spoke to told me there's no emergency dentistry currently available in the UK, because they don't have PPE.

MorrisZapp · 10/04/2020 19:30

Ps it was beside the toothpaste etc in Sainsbury's

Just coming back because I'm freaking out. My DH got me some temporary filling from superdrug, filled the tooth no problem. Today, part of a tooth on the other side of my mouth has chipped off at the bottom. What is going on?! I feel like my teeth are crumbling all of a sudden. I called my dentists out of hours number but they are only dealing with patients in severe pain or with symptoms of infection. I have neither. Aargh!

I’m in the same boat. Been phoning the emergency pharmacies today, not one has the temporary filling “stuff” . My tooth broke yesterday.
Sold out on Amazon as well. I’ve resigned myself to waiting for the supermarkets to open tomorrow.

Chrisinthemorning · 12/04/2020 16:12

No face to face at all, it’s too dangerous.
AAA - advice, analgesia, antibiotics are available and referral to as yet not fully open urgent dental hubs for severe emergencies such as swellings.
I won’t be drilling teeth personally until there’s a vaccine, but others may be less risk averse!

postitnot · 12/04/2020 20:01

If you can't get hold of temporary filling material from the supermarket/pharmacy, you could try a bit of babybel wax! I've heard it works very well.

AnneKipanki · 13/04/2020 18:17

Most Scottish Dental Practices now have a self help guide on their FaceBook or website.

Bananasandchocolatecustard · 13/04/2020 18:36

After much effort to find temporary filling stuff , I’m now waiting for Tesco to phone me tomorrow when they hopefully get a delivery.
