I'm shielding, DD is vulnerable.

I've turned it off and have no idea what to do now.

Do you know any plumbers local to you?, they will still be able to come out if it's an emergency.

@pigletjohn might be able to help with advice

You will have to call someone to fix it. Really bad timing but the gas engineer will only have to come into that room, fix it then go. Keep all the windows open, scrub all surfaces & door handles after they’ve gone (wearing gloves) , explain about shielding when you call them & say you won’t be making tea/coffee and would rather they didn’t use the bathroom.
They won’t want to come within 2 m of you either so, when they arrive, open the door and tell them to stand outside whilst you explain what the problem is and give directions to the boiler. It’s all you can do really.

Definetly phone a plumber. chat through with them how you are going to manage a visit. Probably the most sensible is for them to phone you when they are outside. You then unlock the front door and go into another room with the door shut. Depending on where the boiler is they shouldn't need to touch anywhere that you will then touch. If they do eg if boiler is in the kitchen, ask they to wipe anything they have touched. If they need to talk to you during the visit they can do this by phone.

By now they will have procedures in place for managing this so take their advice.

please describe and photograph where it is leaking from, and say when it happens.

What does the pressure gauge read?

Tinyhumansurvivalist · 10/04/2020 16:53

First off... Please phone a gas engineer not a plumber.

Second... As advice above, explain the situation, ask them to remove shoes and leave outside of not raining, wear gloves, masks etc whatever makes you feel safe but you need to get it fixed lockdown or not.

mencken · 10/04/2020 17:34

to reiterate - there are gas engineers still working, they want the work and they don't want to get CV any more than you do.

as always, check them on the gas safe register before making arrangements. A proper gas person will be happy that you are doing this.

British Gas are still doing emergency call outs - we managed to get a next day appointment on Monday when we got up to find the boiler had gone off and was showing an error code. He probably didn’t do the most thorough job I’ve ever seen, but put the new part in and got it up and running straight away.

Love the fact that @PigletJohn was called, and like the superhero he is, flew into the thread (little bit in love with PigletJohn)

PigletJohn · 10/04/2020 19:12

I've got more time since I gave up the massage business and moved away from Hull.

HarrySnotter · 10/04/2020 19:24

Sorry, thank you folks - a Worcester chap is coming out Monday. They have assured me that they will be wearing mask gloves and will adhere to all guidelines. In the meantime, boiler is switched off. Don't need any heating and the downstairs shower is electic so we'll manage til then. Perfect timing this eh? 🙄 x

This is an emergency, get a plumber but keep your distance.

helpfulperson · 10/04/2020 20:03

Those who commented are absolutely right for a boiler it needs to be a gas safe registered engineer. I was using plumber as short hand but it is important. I see that you have a proper boiler person coming.
