Manchester/Salford - Where’s nice to live?

Currently pondering a job offer for a role that I really want to take - challenging, great salary and public sector, but it would involve relocating (when practical in terms of corona virus) to commuting distance of Salford.

Having difficulty imagining what it would be like, where to live, what primary schools etc.

Does anyone else work in Salford and mind telling me what areas they would recommend?

Which bit of Salford would you be working and what kind of lifestyle are you looking for. I've worked in some "gritty" bits of Salford but you've also got nice suburbs, parts that are practically Manchester City Centre, and all sorts in between

Stringervest · 10/04/2020 12:05

Very important questions: what are your housing needs and what is your budget?

Crikey0000 · 10/04/2020 12:06

Salford traffic is a flipping nightmare so be sure to check the practicalities of your route, not just the distance.

We lived Trafford Bar/Whalley Range and really liked it. Big houses with decent schools, walking distance to Chorlton & open spaces, but good tram links to get into the city and beyond.

dun1urkin · 10/04/2020 12:09

You need to tell us how much money you have to spend and how big a house you need, within easy commute of Salford you’re looking at anything between £100k and £1m areas.

pinkblanchmange · 10/04/2020 12:20

Worsley

SwedishK · 10/04/2020 12:34

Altrincham is really nice and have excellent schools. Quite pricey though so it depends what your budget is. Sale is fine too.

Notopel · 10/04/2020 13:02

Thanks. I’ve seen a few areas that seem a bit gritty from Streetview.

Monthly take home will be around £3600. Renting initially and that’s a factor in how much rent I want to pay as ideally want to be saving around £800 a month towards a house deposit if possible.

Distance is a factor as a lone parent. The role is really demanding so I could do with limiting the time spent travelling each day. I looked at Glossop, Derbyshire as the distance seemed okay but then I know nothing about local traffic etc

The commute from Glossop would be horrific
Look in Monton and Worsley

Mirada · 10/04/2020 13:12

Glossop (grim weather in winter) to Salford would be madness.
As said Manchester traffic is amongst the worst in the country....but the city has an exellent tram network...I'd look to make use of it.

TheLastQueenOfPop · 10/04/2020 13:12

Have a look at Prestwich/Whitefield. Schools are fine, commute shouldn't be horrendous and can get tram if needed.

Sugarfreejelly · 10/04/2020 13:14

I’d also say Prestwich and Whitefield. I have several friends there and both areas are nice, and also on the tram line

Notopel · 10/04/2020 13:14

Sale looks nice. How long would it take to get to Salford from there? Workplace would be fairly close to the Quays.

OP posts:
dun1urkin · 10/04/2020 13:16

Sale is nice. V good schools. Commute to Salford Quays would be ok, depending on time of day and where in Sale to where near the Quays maybe 30 min drive

wowfudge · 10/04/2020 13:17

Monton, Worsley, Swinton south of the East Lancs Road, Ellesmere Park and parts of Salford 6 are all worth a look. One of the best primary schools in Salford is Broadoak in Swinton, very close to the Worsley border.

Mirada · 10/04/2020 13:23

Agree with wowfudge Eccles is at the end of tramline - only 7 stops from Quays, and gives you access to the areas mentioned.
Prestwich is on the wrong side of the city.

wowfudge · 10/04/2020 13:27

Getting to and from Sale to the Quays can be a bloody nightmare when United are playing at home.

bookish83 · 10/04/2020 15:34

Chorlton/didsbury
Prestwich
Monton
Worsley
Boothstown
Whitefield
The Quays is nice if you wanted apartment living
Bolton (some nice rural areas and A666 leads to Salford way)

Definitely some parts of Salford that you would probably want to drive through first as personally could not recommend.

The commute from Glossop would be horrific. Traffic in Salford is also awful but it would depend on your working times x

Mirrorxx · 10/04/2020 15:37

We live in salford quays, in a house not flat. It’s only 15 minutes to city centre on the tram and it’s nice to be able to walk to media city.
We are currently looking to move to south Manchester but not because we don’t like salford quays.

Stringervest · 10/04/2020 16:11

The schools in Trafford are generally excellent. Stretford is the least nice part of Trafford but it is fine. Urmston is unpretentious and nice, Sale is great, as is Altrincham, though Altrincham is expensive and the commute would be long.

PennyArrowBar · 10/04/2020 17:26

Worsley.

shuttheblinds · 10/04/2020 18:30

Avoid Eccles it is grim. Worsley,, Monton, Prestwich, Whitefield all much better.

I agree, commute from Glossop would be awful.

EducatingArti · 10/04/2020 18:35

Rent in Monton to start with, then see where you would like to be based permanently
I'd be careful about any of the "naice" areas more to the south of Manchester as commuting could be terrible ( I have lived in Salford for 33 years).

EducatingArti · 10/04/2020 18:36

Depending on whereabouts in Salford you needed to get to the commute from Prestwich or Whitefield could be horrible as there are limited routes for crossing the Irwell valley

EducatingArti · 10/04/2020 18:40

Primary schools in Salford vary and it does depend on what kind of school you need, eg I know of one or two that are great for bright children with no specific learning difficulties but really not so good for those who need specific help.
