Can anyone recommend a magazine for 7/8yos?

Thinking about getting a magazine subscription for my dds (age 7 and nearly 9, both good readers). I'd prefer something a bit educational, I quite fancy National Geographic Kids as they are quite into animals and eco issues, but have also seen The Phoenix which looks good too. Not sure if there are any other ones to look at?

Any recommendations? TIA.

The week junior. And Science & Nature from
The same publishers.

Aquila is good, my DD enjoyed that. Different theme every month.

Thank you! Hadn't heard of them, I will have a look.

We had The Phoenix for DD from age 6-7yrs and then she moved on to The Week Junior.
Nat Geo kids has a lot of adverts.

BiggerBoat1 · 09/04/2020 18:10

Aquilla is great!

Paddingtonthebear · 09/04/2020 18:10

Also had this for a while, no adverts

The Phoenix is a comic rather than a magazine (not to denigrate comics I think they are a great art form and I subscribe to the Phoenix .)

Discovery Box? We get this for my 11 yr old boy. He's starting to outgrow it a bit now but loved it for a couple of years.

Ds loves National Geographic.

MartyrGuacamole · 09/04/2020 18:27

How about the Horrible Histories magazine ? I've been eyeing it up for my dd :)

DT's get National Geographic Kids and Whizz Pop Bang which is a science based magazine. Both good and they both like to share them.

MountainWitch · 09/04/2020 18:30

We get the Beano and the Phoenix and they've been amazing, especially now! Both comics rather than educational magazines but worth every penny imo

OakleyStreetisnotinChelsea · 09/04/2020 18:30

We get Aquilla and The Week Junior. Used to get Eco Kids which is very good, lots of info and unlike Nat Geo isn't full of adverts. Also used to get Whizz Pop the science magazine which is good. Both stopped just because we'd had them a while so were starting to repeat topics. Might look into restarting one for youngest child now though.

Check out owlkids.com, they have three different age magazines. My son use to get the oldest one- owl and it was a great mix of sicence/tech/nature/maths

Lucked · 09/04/2020 18:31

Ecokids (nature and science) and WhizzPopBang (science) are worth a look.

consideryourselfathome · 09/04/2020 18:32

National geographic junior

Potterspotter · 09/04/2020 18:32

All good suggestions, we’ve had all of these, we’ve had Aquila the longest though

Stompythedinosaur · 09/04/2020 18:41

Thanks - I appreciate all the ideas. Really helpful to know about the adverts in Nat Geo Kids.

Do you have amazon prime?
You could download some of the magazines for a free trial (just don't forget to cancel). They could then decide which they like before you commit to a subscription. If you don't have a kindle you can download the app.

Pascha · 09/04/2020 19:36

aquila is good.

Pascha · 09/04/2020 19:40

Also, if you download RBDigital app and register your library card you can read The Week Jr and Nat. Geo kids on there.

Moreisnnogedag · 09/04/2020 19:43

We get the Phoenix and love it but it isn’t educational.

Interested in the others mentioned here now...

Footle · 10/04/2020 07:30

Another vote for Aquila, 2nd generation enjoying it now

Patchworksack · 10/04/2020 07:33

The Week Junior. We tried others, this is the only one actually read cover to cover every week by 9 and 13 yr old. 5 year old will enjoy some bits of it so should be perfect for your age group.
