FFS! Neighbours at the bottom of the garden lighting bonfires EVERY DAY!

Hi,

So for the 5th day in a row, our neighbours have lit a bonfire and the plume of smoke comes directly up into our garden, meaning we have to bring in our washing and can't sit out and enjoy the sun (what else is there to do?!)

I can feel it on my chest if we do. It's horrible. I have mild asthma, as does my DD more importantly and she can't open her window! She rarely ventures out in the garden these days, as she's 13, so would much rather be snap chatting or YouTubing in her room 😬 but still, this is beyond inconsiderate, right?

I was going over yesterday because I had had enough, but DP told me to leave it, as they might be horrible and the last thing we want are issues with our neighbours, but this isn't just annoying, it's a bloody health hazard!

WWYD?

We have been receiving updates from the council specifically telling people not to light bonfires, given the risk to people with respiratory conditions, or it becoming out of control and requiring emergency services. Perhaps call the council for advice?

Sallycinammonbangsthedruminthe · 09/04/2020 13:44

I would phone the police and ask them to visit your neighbours or the council ....I wouldnt hesitate to do either as its antisocial .

woodencoffeetable · 09/04/2020 13:45

do you have a hose long enough?

dementedpixie · 09/04/2020 13:46

Some councils are prohibiting bonfires during coronavirus as it is a respiratory infection. Maybe check what yours says

happystory · 09/04/2020 13:46

Report it to the council, they're banned round here

SpeedwellBlue · 09/04/2020 13:47

It sounds like some councils are being more proactive in stopping this than others. Ours is a bit crap so probably won't bother!

starrysimon · 09/04/2020 13:49

A neighbouring county’s police force posted yesterday on FB specifically stating that people should not be burning anything in their gardens unless they are really far away from any other properties. They said it was selfish due to the virus affecting the lungs

PainAuChocolatAndBlackCoffee · 09/04/2020 13:56

@woodencoffeetable, haha I like your thinking. I really do. I have definitely had some anti social retaliation thoughts....

The thing is, we are supposed to be moving (I know) and if we report it to the police or council, we will have to declare it on the home buyers pack. We have already filled it out, as we're right at the end of it, but I would suspect we'd be legally obligated to mention it??

I doubt you would as it's not a dispute. Judging from my house buying experience anyway.

WhenItIsOver · 09/04/2020 14:13

If you live in the Barnet area don't bother with the council, they don't give a shit about people struggling to breathe.

Iamtryingtobenicehere · 09/04/2020 14:27

Do you have a hose pipe?
Damp down their bonfire and explain that you’d like to enjoy fresh air and dry washing rather than smoke.
I lit my fire pit last night, after dark. Enjoyed a drink by the flames. Stayed out until midnight. There’s no need for daytime fires at thirsting of year.

Iamtryingtobenicehere · 09/04/2020 14:28

this time

PainAuChocolatAndBlackCoffee · 09/04/2020 14:38

@lamtryingtobenicehere, I do and it would be INCREDIBLY satisfying, but am trying to resist the urge Confused

Note through the door?

OP posts:
PainAuChocolatAndBlackCoffee · 09/04/2020 18:34

And they've just lit another one 😠

This is absolutely ridiculous! If I call the local police, I can request to remain anonymous can't I?

Environment health call and also non emergency no police.

It's criminal at the moment there's bound to be someone who with breathing issues near by...

We had this and eh came out and police were also interested...

BornfreebutinCovidChains · 09/04/2020 18:42

Pain not on this instance a dispute nno

caramac04 · 09/04/2020 18:48

People are burning rubbish because many local amenity tips are closed.
However, it used to be the case that garden bonfires were prohibited, very reasonably, before 7pm or 7:30pm.
It is probably more reasonable to say no burning before 8pm
How can you dry washing or enjoy your garden with stinky smoke wafting or billowing over?
I would ask your neighbour to desist from lighting bonfires before 7:30-8pm.
