Are you buying fresh bread?

Going shopping in a min. Are the supermarket bakeries still open? If so, are you buying fresh bread/pastries etc? Or are you sticking to pre packed stuff? I'd love some bloomer!

Our supermarket had fresh bread but not pastries. I don’t usually buy it and wouldn’t buy it right now because it doesn’t have the shelf life of other bread and therefore I can reduce the trips to the supermarket.

Yes I am, when it’s there. We’re only really shopping in the evening when it’s quieter so less left then

PleasantVille · 09/04/2020 09:04

My local Morrisons still has fresh bread but that's of zero use to you unless you happen to shop there too Smile

You might get a more useful answer from locals, my local Facebook pages have been really good with people asking specific questions about the various shops near me.

All the supermarkets I’ve been to have had fresh bread. There are lots of small bakeries still open here too.

Yes, DH went to Sainsburys quite late last night and they only had fresh bread left, probably because people are only buying the kind that lasts a long time.

thegreylady · 09/04/2020 09:26

Yes we are buying and freezing fresh bread.

LondonJax · 09/04/2020 09:38

We're buying and freezing sliced bread and I make and freeze white loaves (I've been making bread for about 5 years now - shove it in all the mixer, give it 10 minutes, leave it to rest for an hour, into tins another 30 minute rest and then in the oven.) The bread freezes well and it's usually used within a fortnight.

Yes Tesco, M&S (the two shops I go to) have plenty of store baked bread. Pastries are more limited as they are prioritising bread but occasionally there's some.

Aragog · 09/04/2020 09:45

Yes, from the local bakery. It's been delicious.

We mix and match between fresh, part baked and normal pack of sliced bread.

Sgtmajormummy · 09/04/2020 09:57

Yes.
There’s plenty available of all sorts and any bread we aren’t expecting to eat goes in the freezer. 1 minute in the microwave and it’s back in use.

Baking your own is a waste of a day IMO. I make acceptable cakes but my bread is never as good as the bought stuff.

Plus I had a nasty experience with the bread maker machine I bought about a decade ago. When I got around to cleaning the top of my kitchen cupboards Grin they were covered in nasty yeast-smelling spore webs.
That delicious smell of baking bread? Yep, it’s the yeast wafting around. Yeast is a type of fungus.

TheTurnOfTheScrew · 09/04/2020 09:58

yes. In fact a couple of weeks ago when the pre-packed bread aisle was looking very 1980s USSR, the bakery counter was well stocked with all sorts.

Afonavon · 09/04/2020 10:58

Lidl’s instore bakery was completely empty on Monday, with no sign explaining why. I therefore assume that it was a staffing issue rather than an official shut down to Lidl bakeries.

I have been baking my own bread having splurged on a mixer. Sadly this has resulted in everyone putting on weight.

Thanks all. Went to Sainsburys and got fresh bread and rolls!
