Chocolate chip cookies. Plain flour and baking powder. Why didn't they rise at all? (They still taste good)

Cookies aren't meant to rise, are they? Normally you make them in little balls and then the flatten. Did you flatten them before you baked them?

foobio · 08/04/2020 20:29

Did you refrigerate the dough before baking? Instinct says there might be too much butter, but that's not based on any skill!

CheddarGorgeous · 08/04/2020 20:30

No they were lovely round balls. They had baking powder in them so should have risen a little? They just spread out and merged!

Too much sugar?

JellyBellies · 08/04/2020 20:33

Ah, well that's way too spread out if they were balls! What recipe did you use?

WreckTangled · 08/04/2020 20:33

My cookies rose too much and ended up like rock cakes. Maybe together we could make the perfect ones Grin

CheddarGorgeous · 08/04/2020 20:33

I think too much butter. They are greasy. Yes, we refrigerated for about an hour.

I was thinking too much sugar, too DartmoorChef

samlovesdilys · 08/04/2020 20:34

Oven too hot does this for me...my kids call them 'Nummy's cowpat cookies' but still eat them all!!

CheddarGorgeous · 08/04/2020 20:35

@JellyBellies DD picked a random one from the internet:

Are you sure the recipe called for baking powder and not bicarbonate of soda?

Duckchick · 08/04/2020 20:37

Did you refrigerate them first, mine look like that if I don't?

I find this recipe very reliable and she has lots of tips on what you need to do to get a good cookie sallysbakingaddiction.com/chewy-chocolate-chip-cookies/comment-page-9/

fallfallfall · 08/04/2020 20:37

did you use real butter? or margarine or a "soft butter" which has oil mixed in?

edgeware · 08/04/2020 20:39

They would have been too warm. You should refrigerate the balls first for at least 2 hours

CheddarGorgeous · 08/04/2020 20:39

@Duckchick we'll try that the next time.

Real butter.

Recipe asked for baking soda. We used baking powder. Please tell me its approximately the same thing??

fallfallfall · 08/04/2020 20:39

BAKING SODA is not the same as BAKING POWDER!
the recipe clearly says baking soda and you refer to powder

Yesterdayforgotten · 08/04/2020 20:41

CheddarGorgeous no? I thought it was strange you used baking powder and not baking soda. Cookies arent cakes and generally have baking soda in the recipe. You use baking powder and there is nowhere for then to.go so they spread.

Yesterdayforgotten · 08/04/2020 20:41

them*

CheddarGorgeous · 08/04/2020 20:41

@edgeware thanks, I think you're right. Our kitchen was really warm today so it was probably warm going into the fridge and warmed back up quickly when out.

Never mind, we'll still eat themGrin

@fallfallfall BlushBlushBlush

Really?

So what the fuck is baking powder then?

OP posts:
Yesterdayforgotten · 08/04/2020 20:45

Baking powder and baking soda are two different things op! Never confuse the two as they create different chemical reactions!

Yesterdayforgotten · 08/04/2020 20:46

That's why I asked because your cookies looked like they were a product of a reaction caused by baking powder.

CheddarGorgeous · 08/04/2020 20:47

Well, mystery solved then!

I feel such an idiot Grin

www.healthline.com/nutrition/baking-soda-vs-baking-powder

just a random google search.

but in north america we don't have self rising flower so learning the difference between baking soda and powder is one of the first things beginner cooks learn.
