If you're doing someone else's shopping, are you doing it the same time as yours or going out an extra day?

I'm getting my elderly auntie's shopping and some of my mum's, plus obviously mine!

I don't want to be that person in Tesco with 3 loaves and 3 jugs of milk, but should I be doing that to stop leaving the house?

I am doing our shopping and one other persons. I am writing both lists together with their stuff in red, ours in black/blue so I can go round as quickly and efficiently as possible. Trying to put their stuff at one end of the trolley and ours at the other so I can then pay separately. I have actually only done 1 shopping trip since lockdown due to illness so only tried this once. It worked quite well, cashier was happy for me to do it in two lots, nothing was said about me having more of some stuff but equally I wasn't buying stupid amounts of stuff that was short in supply. Definitely try to do as few shops as possible as that way you are minimising contact for both you and other people. I think a lot of the limits on buying stuff is easing now that stocks are stabilising.

Same time. I ration, say this week toilet roll i buy is for me, next week its for gran MIL. Milk and bread so far I havent been stopped from buying 2 loaves at a time.

Youngatheart00 · 08/04/2020 19:52

Doing it at the same time. Albeit I only help with “bits” (prob 10-12 items at a time) rather than a full weekly shop.

SimonJT · 08/04/2020 19:52

At a different time. My boyfriend is doing it for us and his flatmate, he doesn’t have arm muscles so can’t carry a lot and we don’t have a shopping trolley etc.

TheWordmeister · 08/04/2020 19:54

We are doing it at the same time for my MiL, although I just had to pop to the co-op for some extra things she needed and there was no-one in there, so I didn't feel too guilty.

popcorndiva · 08/04/2020 19:54

Same time. Put it through till on seperate receipts

TheRuralJuror · 08/04/2020 19:55

Yes buying for our family of 5 plus my mum. 2 shielded people, can't get a delivery slot, limits on what we can buy in store, it's a pain in the fucking arse.

BeansOnToast4T · 08/04/2020 19:56

I'm shopping for us, in laws, my parents, my next door neighbours and a family friend. I go twice a week and usually go to two supermarkets to get everything.

TheExtraNolan · 08/04/2020 19:57

I think I maybe need to do more planning, different colours or coordination both are good ideas.

I'm doing ours at the weekend and my parents miss week as it gives us a chance to pick up any bits were missing. There is no way I can do both full shops in one go, it would never all fit in one trolley!

sunshinestanley · 08/04/2020 20:00

We're doing it at the same time as ours if possible. DH went and got ours (family of 4), plus 2 elderly neighbours (10-12 items each). Had 2 baskets in a trolley and paid separately for each lot.

Today we both went as we needed to shop for my parents too who are self-isolating. I shopped for both neighbours, DH shopped for us and my DPs.

TitsalinaBumSquash · 08/04/2020 20:03

Our family are having to shield so aren't going shopping at all, so what I've been doing is asking the group of people who have all volunteered to get us essentials to let me know when they're going and asking them to get the basics at the same time (is it fits in with the maximum purchase amounts and doesn't reflect their sopping) so they don't have to go in extra amounts and face extra exposure.

TheTurnOfTheScrew · 08/04/2020 20:06

same time to reduce exposure.
I pay and bag the lot, and then sort it out at home and tot up the bill (ful receipt given to neighbour so they can check).

jillandhersprite · 08/04/2020 20:07

I'm doing all together - our family of 4, parents, and elderly couple neighbour. First time it was ok - our shop plus bits for them. Today it was full shops for all of us and a bloomin nightmare. It all fit in the trolley but then I put on belt separately so they could be paid for separately which worked - but then it didn't all fit back into the trolley nicely!!!
I think I am going to have to go out sooner so although technically we could now all cope till next Wednesday it will be more manageable if I go on Monday...
So trying to go as rarely as is doable - but probably not as rarely as many mumsnetters would like me to do judging by some of the threads I've read on here today..

I was surprised to see someone I knew in the. Elderly and vulnerable queue. Shopping for an elderly person with just a basket. Why go through all that? And take up space in the shop when god genuinely elderly and vulnerable were there.

Floralnomad · 08/04/2020 20:18

My sister is shopping for her household ( 3 adults) , my household ( 3 adults) and an elderly relative , she is going a couple of times a week but she goes to Sainsbury and M&S usually . Our house alone gets through gallons of milk per week .

Aposterhasnoname · 08/04/2020 20:20

I have to go 2-3 times, I just can’t physically fit what I need in one trolley, not to mention the restrictions and the fact that by the time I can go, after work I cant get half the stuff we need.

ifonly4 · 08/04/2020 20:31

I'm doing ours and my Mums, once a week. I offered to shop for two elderly neighbours, so glad they refused now, as it's be a struggle and I don't want to be in the supermarket too much myself right now. My Mum has just told me she wants four two pint milks. Hope they've lifted their restrictions, as I always get one for us at the same time.

JayAlfredPrufrock · 08/04/2020 23:04

What’s your mum doing with 8 pints of milk Confused
