Ovenless meal ideas?

The oven has croaked it, we can't afford a new one right now and not sure whether it can be repaired at the moment!

The hobs still work, we have a microwave and I think the grill may still work, any meal ideas to get us through?

Risotto
Fajitas
Stir fry
Omelette
Soup

SoldiersinPetticoats · 08/04/2020 11:07

Pasta
fry ups
Sausage and mash
Corn fritters and beans

Seriously there's loads. We rarely use our oven.

Wereallsquare · 08/04/2020 11:08

Fried rice, stove top mac and cheese (colour under broiler if it is indeed working), skillet chicken and rice, chilli, bean soups, skillet grilled cheese, stir fries...

What ingredients do you plan to use?

Order a slow cooker from Amazon?

horlicksbabe · 08/04/2020 11:10

You'll be fine with all the suggestions, we have only had a hob and a microwave for years, alternatively you could buy a combination microwave and convection oven.

JustCheesz · 08/04/2020 11:11

I got an air fryer and now hardly ever use the oven. Could be worth looking into this as a stopgap.

Leavesofautumn · 08/04/2020 11:12

Cous cous. You don't even need a saucepan, just boil the kettle and pour water over it. Add whatever vegetables you like and some halloumi or feta.

inwood · 08/04/2020 11:13

Fried rice
Noodle soup
Any pasta dish

Thinking about it the only thing I really use my oven for is sausages (hate doing them under the grill as they spit everywhere), freezer food and roasts.

Seaglasss · 08/04/2020 11:15

Thanks for all the suggestions, the microwave does have convection option however when we tried to finish off the half cooked potatoes in it, it filled the kitchen with smoke Confused

We use the oven lots, have lots of pies and bakes, but I suppose I could thoroughly cook those on the hob and crisp off under the grill?

We eat mostly veggie and have one with an egg allergy.

McCain microwave jackets are really nice. I was a snob about them until i tried one...so nice.

YinuCeatleAyru · 08/04/2020 11:16

Sausage & mash
Chilli & Rice
Spaghetti carbonara
Stew with dumplings
Curries applenty
Stir fries

We only use our oven once or twice a week

willowhazel · 08/04/2020 13:11

With the microwave put a bowl of water in it and microwave that for a couple of minutes and then leave the door closed for a while, it'll thoroughly clean it out when you wipe it afterwards.
That should get rid of any smoke causing residue. Make sure nothing is blocking the vents.

JingsMahBucket · 08/04/2020 13:21

I was going to suggest getting a toaster oven/mini oven too to round out your kitchen.

As for your large oven, I’d still give the repair people a call for a quote. That seems like it would be an essential service.

SpicedCamomile · 08/04/2020 13:28

We also only use the oven for baked potatoes, sausages and roasts. Practically everything else on the hob - curries, dahl, tagine, casserole, dim sum, stir fry, stew, spag bol, soup, omelette, tortilla...

GBroGal · 08/04/2020 14:01

My oven broke - all it needed was a new heating element which cost £70, including the fitting.

In the meantime, I experimented. I made an apple crumble by dry-frying the crumble mix until it was nice and golden, then scattered it over the cooked apples.
