Is this a scam?

Selling something on Gumtree for £30. Have had someone messaging on about it for a week or two now. It reads like a scam “good day fine sirs I am interested in your most top quality product” etc which isn’t really typical of how people speak around here.
Buyer says he lives 30 mins away but doesn’t drive and wanted delivery. Gave an address that exists. We said no, there’s a lock down. We cooled contact as seems all weird but Buyer keeps messaging and saying he’ll take the bus here to pick it up. Asked our address once but we didn’t give, we said we’d meet him at bus stop. Then he cancelled then rearranged then cancelled and now back saying he’ll come today.
Bus to ours would be about £9 round trip and take a good few hours Given where he lives with respect to correct bus stop, and bus schedule.
It’s not a rare thing we are selling. And we are talking £30.
These facts plus the unusual phrasing of the messages make us suspect it’s a scam, but I just can’t figure out the point! No mention of PayPal. I don’t see what someone would do with a first name and address if we did give it. I don’t think this person is truly 30 minutes away.
Any idea what’s going on?

Maybe someone is just taking the piss. It doesn't sound lika a scam as they would be giving money so wouldn't be taking any bank details.
When they were asking you to post there was a possibility for them to scam but not if they are collecting.

JorahsMistress · 08/04/2020 08:14

Sounds very weird! I also cant see the point of a scam, unless they are intending on paying in cash with fake notes! To be honest if it was me alarm bells would be ringing as just reading this makes me feel uneasy about it, I wouldn't want to give out my address feeling like that, and with social distancing etc i dont see how you can safely meet him somewhere, not sure the police would see this as a essential trip, what with him taking public transport

Could just me being paranoid, but given all you have said something sounds off, mind you i have been put off using gumtree ever since i rang up about a place to rent and the woman burst into tears, turns out a nasty ex kept putting her property details and phone number on gumtree so people would ring her up cos he wanted her out the house

No idea what's going on, but they sound strange and flakey at best. I wouldn't go ahead with it.

Sounds like a weirdo. Whether it's technically a scam or not, I'd steer well clear of this person.

HappydaysArehere · 08/04/2020 08:32

Sounds like an idiot having a laugh.

gingerbeerandlemonade · 08/04/2020 08:33

You shouldn't be selling stuff at the moment anyway. Is it essential? No.

Schoolchoicesucks · 08/04/2020 08:43

If the thing you are selling is not rare and is not essential then you are encouraging him to take a non-essential trip on public transport.

Please don't do this.

If the thing is essential (for him) and you are able to deliver without using public transport, you could consider doing this (and charging for the transport).

Why not tell him you'll hold it until after lockdown?

Justrunitunderthetap · 08/04/2020 08:45

Stand well clear. Obviously some plonker thinking he's being funny.

NowWashYourHandsPlease · 08/04/2020 09:06

Surely selling on Gumtree isn't classed as essential. Stop being part of the problem of ignoring the only leaving the house for essentials instructions and sell it later. Surely you don't need £30 more than somebody needs to breathe freely without oxygen

CakeandCoffeeQueen · 08/04/2020 09:09

I gut says it a scam

railwaysailway · 08/04/2020 09:41

I think it's a scam. To me, the language is a giveaway. What have they said about payment?

Undies1990 · 08/04/2020 09:49

I wouldn't engage any further with this joker. Block them from any further contact. They are either winding you up or will meet and not have the cash to give to you.

In any case, we are in a lockdown and they shouldn't be travelling unnecessarily.

Elieza · 08/04/2020 17:59

Tell him it’s no longer for sake and remove the advert. Problem solved.

If you want to sell it after lockdown fair enough.
