Just to let people know there is a Facebook group called For The Love of Scrubs.

The page gives patterns, advice, support and links to material suppliers.

if you think you can help please give it look.

Great idea!

NewYearNewTwatName · 07/04/2020 21:27

springydaff I believe the pattern is a PDF file you then print there is one you can scale up, and there is one that is to size so uses a lot of paper that you then stick together. But you may also find someone local to you who'd share theirs?

I'm not much help because I can't sew but my friend is doing some scrubs.

Woh! Far too complicated tbh.

Give me the kit and the fabric and I'll make at least 5 a day, no problem.

NewYearNewTwatName · 07/04/2020 21:53

springydaff I was reading on there (yes it's not easy to find info or read it!) that it might be possible for you to put a request up for material, plus someone may be able to send you a pattern. it's a resource page were people are donating material and even sewing machines if they can't see themselves.

Also saw a link to a pattern you can buy for £4.99 but takes a few days to arrive.

I found a pattern on here if it helps any one.

apparently there are other groups for different areas, they maybe laid out better.

Dh needs scrubs and is finding it so hard to get. The other doctors are wearing cotton long sleeved tops and loose cooton trousers that can be washed in high temperatures...

Khione · 07/04/2020 22:08

I could sew them up by the dozen, but cutting the pattern (and then the material) no chance.

NewYearNewTwatName · 07/04/2020 22:11

Rory786 if you can find the it, there is a list of the area groups. if you find your area you can put a request in.

Sorry should read short sleeved scrubs...because of contamination.

Its fantastic that people are helping out like this.

permana · 07/04/2020 23:14

Why the hell are there not enough scrubs for medical staff.
I know it's really lovely that people are hand making random scrubs.....but really!!!!!!
Why the hell isn't the government sorting this out!!!!
It's insane!
I'm so angry about this, the government have let us all down and especially the workers in hospital. How could they treat healthcare workers like this?

Heyallyoucoolcatsandkittens · 07/04/2020 23:17

@permana because never in a million years did anyone think we would need scrubs on the scale we do at the moment?

Imagine we bought a fuck ton of scrubs for every hospital in England. More than we could ever use. Just in case of a pandemic. Where would we store them? How would we explain it to finance? Imagine the headlines “NHS wastes millions on unused scrubs in case of once in a hundred years pandemic happens”

Heyallyoucoolcatsandkittens · 07/04/2020 23:19

Most doctors I know use their own scrubs. They wear them once a day and then take them home and wash them.

Now we have hundreds of doctors potentially getting changed 2/3 times a day. One of our consultants brings in 3 changes of shoes for every shift as he is going between Covid and non covid wards. We don’t keep stock like that “just in case”

midlifecrash · 07/04/2020 23:25

This is crazy. Absolutely crazy. This is First World War stuff or earlier. Get a production line on it, with consistent quality standards. Women's patriotic sewing circles are not going to solve this.

wowfudge · 07/04/2020 23:27

Added to which production in China has probably been disrupted.

NewYearNewTwatName · 08/04/2020 05:03

midlifecrash There are production lines 'on it' as well. I believe Burberry was mentioned last week, there are lots of other manufacturers too.

But as PP said the extra demand for them right now is out stripping supply.

What patronising thing to say.

Leaving aside the how we got to this stage. The bottom line is, scrubs are needed big manufacturing companies have turn to making them already but NHS is still short.

People want to help and individual staff, hospitals and surgeries are making requests.

If people want too help why would you scoff?

Some requests are very precise in what material and colours are used and the final finish, some just want anything that is practical and washable at a high temperature.

Or maybe everyone should just sit back and moan about the Government not providing whilst watching staff struggle on without the resources they need, because "hey, it's not my job"

If people want to help let them, if others don't or can't that's fine too, but don't be a patronising arse about.

Agreed.

My granny was a skilled machinist. After she married and had kids, she still worked in the industry from home. Many many garment factories employed home workers to help with orders and probably still do. People sewing scrubs at home is not much different.

Dynamodopey · 08/04/2020 13:35

Well I can sew and have an industrial sewing machine as well as an overlock machine. However our local hospital trust has said in the paper they don’t want individuals but companies who can help so 🤷🏽‍♀️

I’m currently self isolating as I am in the most vulnerable list due to my condition. I feel helpless that I can’t help anyone and thought this would be a way but looks like I’m not wanted!

permana · 08/04/2020 21:14

@heyallyoucool
Actually a pandemic is entirely predictable....maybe not be Joe Blogs...but most scientists would agree they are reasonably likely in a generation.
I don't think we should be storing mountains of scrubs, but I don't think all the fast fashion manufacturers (we still have done in the UK) should be in-full production, producing these.

I expect my government to be prepared and have contingency plans for:
Terrorist Attacks
Nuclear Attack
Pandemics
War
Etc.

Yes of course not every box can be ticked, but really a pandemic is not unheard of (look at the history books).

permana · 08/04/2020 21:15

Sorry long day, lots of typos.

Heyallyoucoolcatsandkittens · 09/04/2020 06:45

@permana, yep and we have major incident plans for all of the above. That doesn’t translate into having the actual stock of everything we might physically need readily available. PPE expires, meds go off, vents are expensive and take up a lot of space.

Interesting fact, our trust bought a load of vents during SARS. Didn’t use them and got roundly criticised for all the money which was spent. Plans don’t equal action outside of an event. They tell us what to do during.
