Makes me sleepy but I get a horrible thumping head from it in the morning - a sort of hangover.

Yes - it should calm you down so you can sleep . I’m sorry you’re anxious Flowers, I know that feeling . I’m on mirtazapine for the same reason - very thankful just now that it knocks me out .

NorahsBatty · 06/04/2020 22:53

I'm in citalopram but a low dose as restarting (3 weeks on) and propranolol but I'm just a wreck at nights

My head won't stop telling me how awful everything is and how much danger we are in.

Try half and see how you get on x

I used to have terrible anxiety and when all else failed it did help me relax enough to get to.

koshkatt · 06/04/2020 22:55

It definitely does relax you OP so if you are anxious then it will help you.

WifOfBif · 06/04/2020 22:56

The blue nytol worked surprisingly well too, even better than diazepam. Might be worth a try if you can get some tomorrow?

megletthesecond · 06/04/2020 22:57

Yes. But take half, it's late.
I was always very productive on the odd occasion I took it. Stopped the anxiety so I could function properly, then rest.

Sevo7 · 06/04/2020 22:59

They help as long as you try and go to sleep,if you fight it or stay active they wear off pretty quickly. They tend to make me feel exhausted the next day though to the point where I could sleep all day even when I’ve had plenty of sleep so I avoid them now for that reason.

TheChosenTwo · 06/04/2020 23:06

What strength are they?
Have you taken them before?
I take them occasionally for my slipped discs. 1 10mg at night and I’m asleep within about 30 minutes. Helps my body to relax enough into a comfortable position For me to sleep and knocks me out.
I could easily be addicted to the lovely heavy woozy feeling and totally understand why they restrict their administration!
They do make me feel a little groggy the next day, not awful, just like a light hangover and it takes a few hours for me to feel like myself again so if you’re going to take some, do it sooner rather than later.
Hope your anxiety calms down soon Flowers

I had to adjust the time I took citalopram as taking it later in the day resulted in insomnia. Tweaking the time you take it might be worth a try?

inflam · 06/04/2020 23:20

Why do you have them? Have they been prescribed to you? If so, take them as per instructions. If not, bin them.

dontgobaconmyheart · 07/04/2020 02:54

I think it depends why you have them OP. If you are on other medication I would certainly not take them without approval from a GP or if you were not specifically prescribed them. If you've not long started citalopram I would wait it out and look for natural ways to relax, the first few weeks of AD's can be tricky.

Diazepam and citalopram are likely to cause side effects which may increase your anxiety such as confusion, dizziness, impaired coordination and I would also say that I'd avoid it if you are worried you have covid-19, as in, actually have symptoms such as coughing and shortness of breath. Diazepam use is associated with an increased risk of pneumonia and respiratory depression. Taking it recreationally is not appropriate here unless there is medical need as dictated by a doctor.

Can you get a phone appointment with your GP to discuss your difficulties at night?
