Best climbing perennial plant to train on an arch?

Total novice at gardening but would love to grow a climber with thick perennial foliage thay also flowers - I like big wbite flowers/blossoms. The arch will be in partial shade - any ideas?,

Some of these suggestions are too rampant for an arch. I’d go for a climbing rose (not a rambler).

Depends on the climbing rose, though - I would say a climber that's going to get to more than 8 feet, or even 6 feet, will also get quite overwhelming unless you're happy to hack it back.

(But I agree!)

For our arch we planted one rose on each side. Took about 2 years to fully cover arch.

Clematis montana and Passionflower are too vigorous for an arch.

I suggest a climbing rose like Gertrude Jekyll on one side and a late flowering clematis like Etoile Violette or Purpurea Plena Elegans on the other side. Then you get two lots of flowers. The Clematis will grow quickly but not too fast

Akebia quinata is good choice and quite unusual.
