Is there such thing as a fun way to learn touch typing?

Online obviously. Happy to pay for it but as long as it's not a fortune. Anyone have any recommendations? Thanks

I remember learning when I joined secondary school. Our teacher covered over all the keyboards with a piece of paper taped to the top of it so that we couldn’t look at the keys. On the desk under the screen we had a print out of the keyboard and where our fingers should rest.

25 years later and I still use this skill. I think I was only one of a few to keep using it though.

We used a programme similar to one a previous poster mentioned. So it would give you an exercise to do then time you. Usually something like ftftftft. Gradually using more complicated combinations.

I think it’s something that can be picked up quite quickly. I did a college course a few years after I left school where everyone had to learn it. I was the only person that could already touch type but everyone in the class caught up with my abilities really really fast!

Try typeracer for fun practice.

I learned with Mavis Beacon, trying not to let the flies pile up on the car windscreen 😂

I was so rubbish at French I did typing instead. Been to France once for less than 24 hours; earned thousands typing though.

Our teacher used to put on a record of 'Tiptoe Through the Tulips' to make us keep to a rhythm. It really should be taught in schools. This became evident when the transition from manual to electric then to computers happened.

I agree it's really frustrating watching people pick and peck but some of them are brilliant at their jobs whereas I'm good at my job and good at typing.

Once learnt it's never forgotten. Though the downside to that is I can't type without both hands on the keyboard and, consequently, it take me about a week to compile a coherent text.

I still can't play the piano with any aplomb though.

Following for ideas !

I taught myself by copying out the considerable content of a programme from a band I'd seen (10cc in 1980 since you ask). I did it over the summer holidays between school and sixth form. I must have typed it tens of times! I then represented my college in a national audio typing competition the very next term.

Apart from about a decade, I've been a secretary ever since (and I used to make a fair bit on the side typing up friends' CVs).

In short, maybe copy type something you enjoy reading?

My class happily use typingclub in their guided reading slots and don't complain it's boring. :)

Englishtype was recommended by school. It's quite fun
