DD (ASD) and nits

Does anyone have any advice?
My DD is 5 and a half and has ASD. I discovered nits in her hair today and despite having had them last year in reception has completely freaked.
I managed to treat her hair but she was in absolute hysterics and was throwing herself around and lashing out at me, DH and her younger sister. Prior to this we had explained the process and the reason why we needed to do her hair but after it was over she asked me of it was to stop her getting Coronavirus so I'm not sure she understood Confused
She also has huge issues sitting still and some sensory issues. She often stands up at school when being taught and seems to have an inability to sit still on a chair correctly for even a short amount of time. She screamed so much for so long I dread to think what the neighbours thought.
She has a limited diet and we bribed her with milky buttons but it only worked for 5 mins or so.
She still has eggs in her hair so we are going to have to get the nit comb out again soon. Today was such a disaster does anyone have any suggestions? She is very intelligent but gets v confused when upset. I would say that her emotional age is probably around about 3.
When it was all over she was very sorry and apologetic but when she is having a meltdown you just can't reason with her.
Has anyone ever been through this? What can I do to make what is an unpleasant experience for her more bearable?

There is a hair mousse you can get that kills them off without combing. I can't for the life of me remember what it's called though 😊

Thank you @WitchDancer- you may have just saved my sanity and DD a lot of anxiety Smile

My son was like this. Every night when he was asleep, I picked out all the head lice and nits I could for a couple of hours. This went on for about a week before I was sure I has got everything. His hair was about 4 inches long at the time, so it may be too time consuming if your daughter has long hair!

dementedpixie · 05/04/2020 22:16

Hedrin suffocates them so you apply and leave to work before washing it off. Repeat every 7 days for 3 weeks

InglouriousBasterd · 05/04/2020 22:24

Nitwits kills eggs too, it’s brilliant! Bloody nits!

ElGuardiandenoche · 05/04/2020 22:24

@WitchDancer, is that Vamousse?

WitchDancer · 05/04/2020 22:26

I think it was a Hedrin one, but it's been a while..... sorry, but I really can't remember 😔

ranoutofquinoaandprosecco · 05/04/2020 22:34

Hedrin is fab and I've only ever had to use it once, fingers crossed. My daughters hair is very long and it's always dealt with it. Good luck. Poor kids too much for them to understand at the moment. We'll be pleased to see someone's got nits when their back at school!

n00bMaster69 · 05/04/2020 22:41

Nitwits is the best, it kill the eggs so no need to comb.

TheABC · 05/04/2020 23:55

Sensory issues and nits are a match made in hell: you have my sympathy, OP!

I managed it with my 6 year old DS, partly through bribery - he got a movie he liked - and partly through "drowning out" the discomfort with another activity that gave him comfort. We managed with a tapping technique and songs, but it's whatever works for your DD.

I had not heard of NitWit. We went with a really nice, fruity conditioner that could be left in, plus the NittyGritty comb.

Daisychainsandglitter · 06/04/2020 06:53

Thanks very much to everyone who has made suggestions. I'll do some research today on the best type of treatment that requires minimal/no combing.
I'll also try my best to think of some bribery tactics/distractions to help for when I next check her hair.

Don't use vamousse it's rubbish. Left it twice as long as it said too and was still combing out live lice. I use full marks, very greasy but kill everything. Use washing up liquid before getting it wet to get it out of hair. I never bother combing, just use for 3 weeks in a row so everything should be dead

Nannyloubie · 06/04/2020 07:30

Hedrin mousse is what we use, leave in overnight

CheesecakeFactory87 · 06/04/2020 07:41

Can you create a social story to explain to her? And do it on yourself at the same time?

Wannabegreenfingers · 06/04/2020 07:52

My daughter had a case of reoccurring nits and then gave them to me!! Non of the above treatmentments worked, so I used the conditioner method and nit comb. It takes a total of 19 days to get rid, but maybe your daughter might like the sensation. Its quiet calming once you get in your stride.

ElGuardiandenoche · 06/04/2020 15:12

Thanks for the recommendations on the Hedrin Mousse. I to found the Vamousse next to useless. We seem to have a strain of nits that are invincible. We are at 4 weeks and counting. Two of us have hair down to our backsides and very thick and the other three have sort but thick hair. I've been combing with a nitty gritty every couple of days with conditioner and tried various potions and I'm at the end of my tether. I though when they got to middle to late secondary and college we would be at the end of this.
