Views on giving babies Losec

Hi all,

I'm a new mum to a 6.5 week old baby girl who has just been diagnosed with GORD and prescribed 2.5mls of Losec once daily. I am extremely hesitant to start her on it as it is medication and she is so young.

I obviously want to help my daughter but I have read articles stating babies will have to be weaned off the medication afterwards, that the lack of acid in the stomach from the tablet increases the risk of illness and pneumonia, and that tbabies seem like new babies 9on Losec to parents because of the alcohol in it and the symptom of fatigue caused by the medication. Also it is not approved in America for children under the age of 1 which concerns me.

Everyone's thoughts on this are much appreciated as I want to help my daughter all I can but extremely nervous giving any medication to baby especially being so small.

Thanks guys!

My son was vomiting blood by the age of 2/3 months. An endoscope showed his stomach and oeshopagus was ulcerated/damaged from the amount of vomiting. The bleeding made him anaemic.

Do you wnat this for your child ?

It's medicine - meaning she wouldn't have been prescribed it if she didn't need it. I'm not quite sure I follow this reasoning that it's medicine therefore you don't want to give it to her? Confused

Did the prescribing doctor not offer a chance to discuss your concerns? Obviously there are risks to any medical intervention but also risks arising from the condition, usually these are weighed up which is when medicine is suggested. And you should have an opportunity to discuss with a medical professional the balancing of these two risks usually.
