Exercise

Why do lots of people think we can only take 1 hour exercise at the moment? Where are they getting this from? As far as I know, it's once a day. Have I got this wrong Confused? I always walk for more than an hour, if I can.

Michael Gove mentioned it as a guide a few days ago when asked for clarification on "one form of exercise".

'Mentioning it as guide' is typical of what this govt. considers to be clarification Grin. Thanks @NotMeNoNo so that's where it came from. I suspect a stricter lockdown will happen soon anyway... Sad

Because people seem incapable of reading, and if they don't want to do that, comprehending the regulations. And social media, just look at this site, likes to make its own rules as the official ones aren't strict enough. Honestly, we live in a country of simpletons.

Gove suggested it as clarification during a press conference. The law itself doesn't specify (just like the law doesn't specify once a week for shopping, instead it talks about as infrequently as possible, but because there are selfish idiots who think it's fine to go to the shop daily for cigarettes and make a trip because they fancy some chocolate there has to be some further clarification 🙄).

Essentially, Gove was saying "don't all go off to the park for a whole afternoon and say it's your exercise" because there's a chunk of the British public who are idiots and always looking for ways to justify their selfish behaviour.

I was saying this to DH - everyone on TV is talking about an hour when the guidance says once a day. Interesting to know Gove mentioned it. He would hate us! We are exploring different walks in our local area and frequently get lost or take an interesting looking detour. Yesterday we were out for 1 hour 20 mins as we went the wrong way down a path in the wood. However, saw about three different groups of people in that time only.

Splodgetastic · 05/04/2020 18:17

1 hour 20 is about the time it takes me to do my 10,000 steps. I know this is an arbitrary number, but I find it a useful benchmark of how much I need to walk not to stiffen up.

Splodgetastic · 05/04/2020 18:18

One hour exactly is a bit tricky even if you try hard to stick to it, so it’s good that there is some flexibility.

Jamonit · 07/04/2020 08:16

I was going to ask the very same question, having just read posts this morning where people are saying you are only allowed 1 hour, as though it is a law.

It probably will be the limit, as an emergency power, for Easter (long) Weekend. As the weather forecast is good, and it's clear that enough people are not following the existing guidance (which is clear to most, but subject to nitpicking by the self-centred).

The potential for household mixing over a sunny 4 day weekend is just too much.

But I hope that'll be temporary, not a settled condition like France (?) which specified max 1 hr and all within 1km of your home address
