Am I just being really grumpy or does anyone else's child (13) do this?

Child: Can I do X?
Me: You can do whatever you like as long as it doesn't involve me because I'm busy.
Child: OK
Child: Where is the Z?
Me: In the drawer.
Child: I can't find it.
Me: Dishwasher?
Child: It's not there.
Me: Use something else then.
Child: I can't find Y
Me: Please leave me in peace.
Child: Where is Y?
Me: I don't know. Either look for it or do something else.
Child: Can you help me?
Me: Not right this minute, I'm busy.
Child: I need a W
Child: Where is the W?
Child: I can't do this now because I can't find the W.

This in between bursts of "what can I eat?" "can I have a sandwich?" "can I watch Youtube?" "should I wear my shorts?"

Shouldn't a child of that age be able to just do something without the commentary for a bit?

You would think so, but these odd times seem to have made normally stoic and bombproof DS more...not dependent but possibly clingy?
As he's almost 16 it's a real change of modus operandi. I can only imagine that it's a product of the uncertainty we're all going through (though I do feel your pain!)

Ah yes. The teenage 'whereismy' years. It's like they walk round with blinkers on.

MrsDoylesTeaBags · 05/04/2020 12:42

Haha, DS always did this, he's been away to Uni since last year but obviously back home now and there were times when he would call me at work to ask me where things were! He made me laugh yesterday as his housemate who is still living in their accomodation text him to ask where their hoover is! Grin

My dh does this...

winniesanderson · 05/04/2020 12:57

My 10 year old is like this. If it pops into her head it must be said aloud. Normally to/at me but even if alone in her room she doesn't stop talking and moving. It's exhausting 😂 She too can never seem to find anything/be bothered to look for anything. I love her to pieces but between her and my toddler I'm in need of 5 minutes peace!

Yup. The year 8s do this to me all the time. Even worse now it is virtual and that means reading instructions.

Me. So, I want you to read x then think about what you would do, then write a piece using third person narrative about xyz.

Child 1. Where is x
Me. On the classroom
Child 1. I can't find the classroom.
Me. You did yesterday. It's the same.
Child 2. It's blurry
Child 1. I cannot find it....found it!
Child 3. Can I write about b
Me. No, I don't want you to write about b, I want you to write xyz
Child 4. I've finished, what do I do now?
Me. I'm expecting this to take 50 mins - 10 mins reading, five thinking, 25 mins writing, rest checking.
Child 4. But I've written all about fgh.
Me I want you to write about xyz
Child 4. Where is that
Me. In the passage you should be reading.
Child 2. It' blurry
Child 3. Can I read you my first paragraph
Me. Yes
Child 3. Reads paragraph based on b.
Me. I said no b. No b is needed.
Child 3. Oh
Child 4. Where's the passage?
