Filing cabinets- what do you use instead?

We have a filing cabinet but no real space for one. It's currently causing an obstruction where it is. DH has suggested getting rid of it, but what do you then do with important documents (birth certificates, house deeds, payslips etc)?

The 35l Really Useful Boxes fit suspension files - that's what we use.

Before that I had a shelf with box files on.

I put all my paperwork in folders and store the folders in boxes. TBH it's a pain having it all in boxes and I have been thinking about getting one of the small filing drawers from Ikea instead. I do have a home office though.

There aren’t that many physical documents that are important these days? A box file or two should work.

Some great ideas, thank you. I'd stuck with the filing cabinet before because it's fireproof (and also can't be physically removed from the house in the event of burglary), but Google tells me you can get fireproof box files so that seems like a great shout. And I could hide them.

Thanks for the link sunshine. I'll see if they have fireproof versions.

@LittleBearPad The insurance documents are in hard copy and there are lots of certificates, but aside from that not too many, thankfully. I think I could shred a lot of it.

For paperwork we use the Really Useful Boxes with suspension files/or to hold lever arch/box files too.

They are used for anything from personal/house papers, school stuff, dh's self employed stuff to spare/winter duvets and pillows, shoes, clothes, kitchen bits that dont get used often etc etc etc. I have a few filled with cd's and dvds I really need to get around to clearing out.

Work was moving offices and binning their old archives and were giving 35l and 18l boxes away so I managed to get 14 in a mix of the 2 sizes for free and when I found so many uses for them bought a few more. Really convenient as the different sizes stack really well and you can move them around easily.

Paperwork we don't need often goes into a box and put into the loft.
The rest are the perfect size for the bottom of the fitted wardrobe in the spare room.
